Floyd Funeral Services, Inc. - Fairmont Obituary

William Craton Screven Simpson, Jr. departed this life on Feb. 28th 2022. He was the son of the late Colonel William Craton Screven Simpson and Mary Cecilia McBroom Simpson and the beloved husband of Julia Elizabeth Oliver Simpson. Screven was born in Honolulu, HI on April 14, 1956.

Screven attended Winthrop University and earned an Associate’s Degree in Horticultural Science at Trident Technical College. He spent his career beautifying and maintaining the campuses of The College of Charleston and MUSC, the City of Lumberton, and countless other properties. As an old soul with a gentle spirit, he was a “behind-the-scenes” person. Screven assisted with multiple community events and was always happy to help a neighbor or friend.

It was at Screven and Julia’s respective best friend’s wedding that Screven met Julia, the one true love of his life. They eloped a short 6 months later. After careers in Charleston, Screven and Julia finally settled at the Oliver Family Farm, Homestead Acres, in Marietta, NC where they were happiest.
In addition to Julia, he is survived by Mary Simpson Lang (Albert), James S. Simpson (Cordes), Claudia Simpson Hapak (Haydon), Jean Simpson Knowlton, Robert C. Simpson, Sr. (Janice), Janet Oliver Hankins (Gordon), Jamie Oliver Coats (Richard) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind an extended family of Olivers, Carmichaels, McBrooms and Simpsons, as well as furry friends Benson, Little Bit, TC and S-10.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Marietta Cemetery, Marietta, NC. The family will receive friends and family at Homestead Acres immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be sent to Marietta Cemetery Fund, PO Box 99 Marietta, NC 28362 or the charity of one’s choice.

Screven and I shared an apartment on George Street. He was one of the kindest, unassuming people I have ever known. One of my favorite stories about Screven is the two of us both reading Stephen Kings "The Shining" and spending the weekend on our own at his family´s home Rhododendron in Flat Rock. Anyone who has ever been there would understand our nervousness reading that book with no one else around. He will be missed.
