Dear Family of Bill Smith,

I was very sorry to learn of Bill's passing in the paper over the weekend. I have known him as a fellow Spartan since I moved here from Michigan in 1980. My enduring memory of him is as the hallmark of a genuinely nice guy. He would often attend our local Michigan State events, where I would usually catch up with him, but occasionally -- as I live just up the hill from Lake Oswego -- he would stop and pick me up when he saw me standing at my bus stop...
