William Henry Spell

Obituary

SPELL, William Henry, of Richmond, Va., died peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2009, surrounded by his four favorite girls. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Cary; his three daughters, Ashley Wilbrooks Spell and her husband, Chris Einolf, Elizabeth Langsford Spell and Molly Randolph Spell; his parents, Bill and Helen Spell; his sister, Susie and her husband, Dale Abrahamson; and his grandchildren, Beatrice Catherine Spell and Henry Asher Spell. Bill was an honors graduate of the University of Georgia and served his country as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He moved to Richmond in 1978 to practice landscape architecture with the firm of Higgins and Associates, and left 12 years ago to form his own company, William H. Spell, LLC. Bill leaves a living legacy that can be found all around us, in both public and residential design. While his classic designs will long serve as a monument to his creativity, Bill was all about people, and those are bonds that can never be broken. Bill gave generously to others, serving his state, city, schools and golf community. He adored his woody plants, was gifted at teaching and mentoring, and found joy in playing the piano for his family. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 20. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Church or Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.
This obituary was originally published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Not sure what to say?

To the Spell Family, I would like to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I worked with Bill on many projects at the University of Mary Washington, all bearing his expression of grace and beauty. He left an indelible mark on the landscape, and thus the lives of the many people who visit our beautiful campus.
I cannot think of Bill without remembering his smile and the many loving stories he told of his family.

To The Spell Family,

I only recent had the pleasure of working with Mr. Spell on a few projects here at the City of Richmond, but I felt as if we were friends for years. He was always warm and friendly. We spent more time talking about children than work. I was shocked to learn of his passing and I am sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers are you and your family at the difficult time.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy. I have served with Bill for several years on the APELSCIDLA Board, and greatly enjoyed getting to know him. Elizabeth and Family,
Words cannot express our deep and heartfelt sympathies extended to your family. This world has lost a treasured husband, father and friend. We will miss him greatly.

Bill was such a kind and cheerful companion to Mother while he lived at Shooters Hill - she cherished his friendship - they shared a love of golf, of plants - and of people.

Elizabeth - I know that I have not known you very long since you came back to the bank but I wanted to let you and your family know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
