Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Sioux Falls Obituary

Willy G. Hoff, age 89, of Sioux Falls, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2025, after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family at the VA Hospice.

Born on August 19, 1935, on a farm in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, Willy grew up with a strong sense of faith, community, and hard work. During high school, he held various jobs—from helping his dad at the implement, working at the creamery, assembling grain bins, to lineman work, with his favorite being his time on the dam project at Pickstown. He was also active in school sports and activities, participating in football, basketball, band, chorus, plays, Jr. Legion baseball, and track. He graduated from Tripp High School in 1954 and proudly began his service in the U.S. Army in January 1955.

While stationed in Germany, Willy learned to play 11-man football, competing across the country, and also earned a spot on the basketball team. In 1957, he enrolled at Southern State Teachers College, where he played football and met the love of his life, Arlene. They were married on August 15, 1958.

A lifelong educator, Willy devoted his career to teaching, coaching, and school administration. He and Arlene lived in several communities including Newell (where they adopted their children, Todd and Tina), Sioux Falls, Hartford, Alden, IA, Irene, Akron, and finally Remsen, where he served as superintendent until his retirement in 1998. In 2002, they moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to their grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Willy touched countless lives with his guidance, encouragement, and unwavering commitment to his students and community. He left a big footprint and a lasting legacy.

Willy was a man of deep faith and generous spirit. He was known for his kind heart, gentle nature, and radiant smile. He had a true love for people and a passion for Bible study, fishing, hunting—and, most importantly, his family and his faith in God.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Arlene; his son, Todd of Sioux Falls; his daughter, Tina (Kevin Yopp) of Sioux Falls; and his three beloved grandchildren, Abby, Megan, and Tyler, all of Sioux Falls. He is also survived by his brother, Ken of Conrad, IA, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Louise; his sister-in-law, Carol Hoff; and many beloved dogs.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 19th, at Heritage Funeral Home, with Visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the Service at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon. Burial with military honors will take place at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Pastor Rodney Knock will officiate the service.

In lieu of sorrow, Willy would want us to smile, love one another, and carry forward the joy he shared so freely.

Not sure what to say?

My deepest condolences to Willy’s family during this difficult time. Although I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Willy personally, I know his son Todd very well. Todd has always shown a deep love for my siblings and me and a generous spirit—qualities he must have inherited from his father. I was fortunate to grow up with Todd, "the fun uncle," and we always looked forward to the weekends when he was around. I’m sending heartfelt thoughts of strength and comfort to all who loved Willy. May...

Willy was a classmate and good friend. Our class has a reunion every year. We have our reunions at Swan Lake Retreat, because you can stay there and they feed you our meals. The rest of the time we sat around and talk and must of the time we would say huh what did you say, Willy had a great sense of humour. He will be missed by a lot of people. RIP sorry for your lost Arlene and family.

Prayers & Peace to all Willy’s Family.
Thankful for Willy’s service in the Military.

Tina, I am so sorry to hear this; I remember you talking about him so fondly and at your wedding, I could feel the love he had for his family. My deepest sympathy to you and yours.

Great memories of Willy. He was our coach and teacher for both of us at Newell High School. Good mentor and friend. We had good visits with him in the past several years and was so good to remember lots of things with him, especially football memories! Our condolences to Arlene and family.

He was one of the teachers and coaches when I attended school in Newell, may his legacy in education and Faith be with him as he passes through the gates of eternity! My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this most difficult time.

Love and prayers, you are in my thoughts. Wonderful memories

So sorry Sending Love and Sympathy!
