Winfred Ponds Obituary

"Winfred "Fred" Roger Ponds, 74, of Baltimore, MD, born in Charlotte, NC, passed away suddenly at home on April 29, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 5, 1951, Fred dedicated his working life to military service.

Fred proudly entered the United States Air Force in 1971, achieving the rank of sergeant. His military career took him to various parts of the world, including tours in Vietnam and Bitburg, Germany.

Following his distinguished military service, Fred continued to serve working for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) for 40 years. Known for his dedication, he left a lasting impact on those he served and worked alongside.

In his retirement, Fred enjoyed Formula 1 racing as an automotive enthusiast, taking care of his home and yard and spending time with his family and pets.

Fred is survived by his loving partner of over 30 years, April Baumbusch; friend and mother of his children, Brunhilde Ponds; beloved children, daughter Jasmin (née Ponds), husband Falk and granddaughter Juna Apponyi; son Niclas, wife Anna and grandsons Jannes and Nathan Ponds, all of Mainz, Germany; loving family Aunt Virgie Starnes and cousin Donna Martin, of Charlotte, NC; dedicated stepsons, Alan Baumbusch; Eric, wife Allison, grandchildren Logan and Gailen Baumbusch; and loving in-laws, Eric and Roz Schneider, Richard Doty and Jane Edwards, Bill Edwards, Sylvester Hayhurst; and his best friend and beloved dog, Ella.

His legacy of service, love and dedication will forever be cherished by his family and friends.

A celebration of life is being planned for the summer.
