Melanie Sims Obituary

NEWARK: A memorial service for Melanie M. Sims, 46, of Newark, will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Sims died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at her home. She was born June 25, 1962 in New Philadelphia, Ohio to William and Madge (Phillips) Meese of New Philadelphia.
Mrs. Sims has been employed with the Newark City Schools for the past 13 years, most of that time as a kindergarten teacher at John Clem Elementary. She was a faculty representative for the NTA and a member of PEO, Chapter EZ. She was a 1980 graduate of Northland High School and a 1984 graduate of The Ohio State University. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church.
She was very involved in her children and their education. She served as a girl scout and cub scout leader, room mother, member of the PTO and participated in numerous committees associated with school activities. In addition, Mrs. Sims loved gardening, working on her pond, sewing, and reading.
In addition to her parents; Melanie is survived by her grandmother, Faye Meese of New Philadelphia; her husband of 26 years, David Sims, whom she married August 21, 1982; daughters, Lindsey (Jonathan) Carle of Findlay, Stephanie Sims of Newark; son, Geoffrey Sims of Newark; sister, Lori (Dave) Brown of Pataskala.
The family will receive friends Friday evening 5 to 8 p.m. at the Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 West Main Street.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to establish a scholarship in memory of Mrs. Sims for Newark High School graduating seniors who attended John Clem. Donations can be made at any Park National Bank location. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
