William Fitzgerald Obituary

Dr. William D. Fitzgerald
Dr. William D. Fitzgerald Sr. 88 years old, of Middletown, RI, passed peacefully on January 9, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
Dr. Fitzgerald, born in Brockton, MA, a native of Whitinsville, was a graduate of Northbridge High School.
He was a Korean War Veteran, having served two years of active duty in the U.S. Navy. Dr. Fitzgerald attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. He was a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He was formerly an advisory board member of the Catholic Charitable Bureau of Boston.
Dr. Fitzgerald began his career with his private dental practice in Medway, MA. During his 37 year career, Dr. Fitzgerald developed a particular passion for providing dental care to seniors and veterans. During the early 1970s, he became known to several nursing homes around Massachusetts as "The King of the Road" as he converted a 27 foot Winnebago into a state of the art mobile dental clinic complete with a working elevator. This Winnebago transformation allowed him to travel to nursing homes and provide dental care to seniors. Later in his career, Dr. Fitzgerald accepted a job as Assistant Chief of Staff at the VA Outpatient Clinic Dental Service in Boston, MA where he was able to ensure the quality dental care of veterans whom he always felt deserved the best care. Additionally, during his time at the VA, Dr. Fitzgerald was instrumental in developing and running the Geriatric Dental Fellowship program. He was an appointed faculty member at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and was a clinical instructor.
Bill leaves his beloved wife and best friend of sixty three years, Maureen Mullin Fitzgerald, formerly of Hopkinton, MA, seven children, Deborah Ascoytia (Hugo), William D. Fitzgerald Jr. (Louise), Susan Horton (Edward pre-deceased), Kevin Fitzgerald, Erin Ruggieri (Paul), Colleen Biello (Tim), Sean Fitzgerald ( Kim), twelve grandchildren; Gregory and Vanessa Fontana, Edward and Andrew Horton, Matthew, Ryan, and John Cute, Kaylan and Kiara Fitzgerald, Daniel Biello, Madeleine and Lauren Fitzgerald; and two great grandchildren, Jase Rideout and Jaiden Cute.
He was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Andrew and Edna (Boutlier) Fitzgerald, brother Andrew, and sister Nancy Fitzgerald.
Dr. Fitzgerald and his family resided in Hopedale, MA for twenty one years. He served his community as a nine year member of the Hopedale School Committee, Chairman of the Hopedale Youth Committee, and manager of his son's little league baseball team.
Dr. Fitzgerald loved to play golf, travel and dance. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family all of whom will treasure those priceless moments with him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations maybe made in Dr. Fitzgerald's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or Home For Our Troops.

Wow! Two years! We spent 40 years in the same profession and 20 years on the golf course! Countless hamburgers and Crown Royal Manhattans, great conversation (and debate!) on religion, the faith, golf....and of course, politics.
Old friends are still the best friends and I think of the days gone by as I pass the house on my morning walks during the summer.

Dr. Fitzgerald was my dentist when I was a student at Medway High School around 1962. I had a "Crush" on my dentist. I atually wrote a long
poem about him. I would love to share it with his family. I will give you my email address and
maybe a family member could respond. Then I could email the
poem.
Thank youso much.

So sorry to hear this sad news of Dr. Fitz! My condolences to all his family and hope he is in a better place. Bill was a great friend to my dad, Dr. Bill Brady. Our families spent many of times together, especially during the holidays. Dr. Fitz was a great guy and had some fun times on the golf course with him and my dad.

Dearest Maureen & Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of “Doc’s” passing. But I am blessed to have been his friend and spends so many happy times with him as a member of the “Prima Donnas” a Wanmetonomy. You were his rock and he spoke of that to me endless times. He cherished his family and his times with them. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. His presence will be forever etched in the fairways and rough at Wanumetonomy!
