John Thomas Salmon, longtime resident of
Millersville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23rd, 2026, at the age of 89. John was born on October 29th, 1936, in Easton and raised in Trappe, Maryland. A first-generation Irishman, he was the son of the late John Salmon, of County Mayo, Ireland, and the late Mary Fitzpatrick Salmon, of County Longford, Ireland. John graduated from Easton High School in 1954 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958 where he served with the 3rd Armored Division in Frankfurt, Germany. Following his Cold War service, John attended Michigan State and then transferred to and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1969. While attending the University of Maryland, John met the love of his life, M. Carol Seitz, and they were married in August of 1967. A career Information Technology Professional, John began his career in 1968 with RCA's Computer Division and worked in their Business Sales group until their exit from the computer business in 1971. He then joined the Comptroller's Office of Maryland where he led the Information Technology Division until his retirement in 2010. Over his four decades at the Comptroller's Office, he was instrumental in modernizing the state's tax processing infrastructure. Most notably, he led the implementation of one of the first fully automated tax return systems in the world, a pioneering initiative managed in partnership with IBM. John's steady leadership was equally vital during the Y2K transition. At a time when global uncertainty surrounded the reliability of aging computer systems, his careful planning and technical oversight ensured Maryland's critical IT operations continued without disruption. Beyond his professional achievements, John celebrated his Irish heritage, was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians – St Patrick's Division 5, and was an active and founding parishioner of St. Bernadette's Parish in Severn, MD. He was widely respected for his uncompromising character, integrity, and professionalism. In every interaction-whether with family or colleagues-he brought a sense of purpose, fairness, and humility. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann (Salmon) Wood of Easton and brother, the Honorable James Patrick Salmon of University Park and John's wife of 53 years, M. Carol (Seitz) Salmon of Baltimore. John and Carol were inseparable and a true testament to a lifelong loving partnership and commitment. They enjoyed time together reading and discussing their days, watching movies, and cheering for the O's and Ravens. Always up for a trip, their travels took them across the country and throughout Europe with favorite stops in San Francisco, California, Frankfurt, Germany, St Peterburg, Russia and County Longford and County Mayo, Ireland. They raised two children, Johnny and Michelle, who kept them quite active, engaged and with no choice but to remain youthful and on their toes. John is survived by daughter Michelle and her wife, Sarah, of Annapolis; son John Fitzpatrick and his wife, Kathleen, and grandchildren Conor, Emma, Liam, and Leo, of Gettysburg; brother Martin and his wife, Denise, of Chesapeake City, Maryland; sister-in-law Sharon Witte Salmon of University Park, Maryland; brothers-in-law Robert Wood of

John T. Salmon will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
