CHAMPAIGN – Jesse Hughes Jr., 73, transitioned peacefully in his sleep Wednesday morning (Oct. 14, 2009) at his home.
He was born Dec. 14, 1935, at Sturgis, Ky., a son of Jesse and Mamie Morris Hughes. He married Barbara Jean Jeffery on Nov. 30, 1963.
He leaves cherishing him with loving memories his loving wife; three daughters, Rosie Williams and Debra (Glen) Brantley, both of Jefferson City, Mo., and Roslyn (Joe) Ash of Champaign; three sons, Jesse Leon Hughes, Brandon Hughes and DeAndre Hughes, all of Champaign; four brothers, Ralph (Francis) Hughes, Robert Taylor Hughes and Don Hughes, all of Indianapolis, and Chales Hughes of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters. His sister, Sharon L. Fowler, joined him in his journey from time to eternity at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 14, 2009).
His hobbies were helping others and going to church. Prior to retirement, he worked as a truck driver for University Asphalt and Central Material. He served as a deacon at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church of Urbana.
Services to celebrate his life will be held at noon Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 1310 N. Sixth St., Champaign, with the Rev. Willie Williams officiating. He will await the resurrection in Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana. Visitation with be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the church.
Ministry of comfort is being provided by Perry's Twin City Mortuary Service of Champaign.
