Marvin Van Eyck Obituary

Marvin R. Van Eyck, 84, Edinburgh, Ind., died September 15, 2007, at Hospice Inpatient Facility, Columbus, Indiana. Mr. Van Eyck was born September 12, 1923, in Holland, Mich., the son of Benjamin Van Eyck and Nancy (Nies) Van Eyck. Survivors include his wife, Lawaine Van Eyck, Edinburgh, whom he married September 23, 1950; son, Jeffery Van Eyck, Ann Arbor, Mich.; three daughters, Lisa and husband, Michael O'Connor, Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland, Nita Van Eyck (John Vereb), Wilbur-By- The-Sea, and Lori and husband Marty Soehren, Mt. Auburn, Ind.; sister, Nina McQueen, Lansing, Mich.; six grandchildren, Jenny, Tessa and Josie O'Connor, and Clancy, Zack and Jacob Soehren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Bernice Campbell. He graduated high school in Holland, Mich., and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1947. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He had lived in this area for six years, spending his summers in Indiana. He was a consulting civil engineer partner with McNamee, Porter & Seeley, Ann Arbor, for 34 years and retired in 1982. He was a member of the Westminster By The Sea Presbyterian Church, Daytona Beach Shores. Mr. Van Eyck was a registered engineer and surveyor in seven states, past president of the Michigan Water Pollution Control Assn., a past president of the Ann Arbor Engineers Club, volunteer with SCORE (Service Corp. of Retired Executives) in Daytona Beach, and he was actively involved in the rebuilding of the historic Wilbur-By-The-Sea Boathouse. He was a member of the Kiwanis and the American Legion. "Papa Marv" loved camping, boating, fishing and was an enthusiastic sports fan. He loved meeting people and always found joy in helping others. A private service will be held at his residence. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana, Columbus, Ind., who gave so much care and comfort in his last days. Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, Shelbyville, Ind., is in charge of arrangements.
