Walter Sullivan Obituary

Published by Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger on Jan. 22, 2005.
Walter Lee Sullivan III, age 68, a 60 year resident of Prince William County, died on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at his vacation home near Reedville, Va. Mr. Sullivan was born in Fairfax County, the son of the late Walter L. Sullivan Jr. and Lillian Javins Sullivan. The family moved to Prince William County in the 1940s and several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan moved from the county into the city of Manassas. He was a 1955 graduate of Osbourn High School in Manassas and served in the United States Army in France from 1958 until 1961. Upon his return to Manassas, he became a partner with Joseph Dotterer in the Credit Bureau of Northern Virginia, Inc. and worked there until his retirement in 1994. Mr. Sullivan served as the Chief of the Lack Jackson Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad for eight years, was a member of the Civitan Club, and was a hearty supporter of the National Rifle Association. For many years, he was a coach in the Greater Manassas Football League and the Chairman of the Prince William Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of the Manassas Baptist Church and also of the Prince William County Board of Zoning Appeals for 11 years and chairman of that board in 1987-1989. During the administration of Police Chief Bernard Reed, Mr. Sullivan was a special officer of the Manassas Town Police Department and also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Manassas Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife of 48 years Martha Rhodes Sullivan of Manassas; three sisters, Theresa Sullivan Nalls and Joyce Sullivan Swank of Manassas and Arlene Sullivan Heinemann of Irving, Texas; one brother Roland Sullivan of Elk Creek, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St. in Manassas on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The service will be conducted by a family friend G. Wallace Hook Jr. The interment is to be held immediately after the service at Sudley United Methodist Church cemetery near Catharpin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Northumberland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1, Reedville, VA 22539; the Lake Jackson Volunteer Fire Department; or the Manassas Baptist Church. Sign the guestbook at http://www.potomacnews.com or http://www.manassasjm.com.

Yes, he is missed but not forgotten, I remember when he attended the auction at Clover Hill Farm and all the wonderful reunions of the class of 1955. We are all sorry for his loss, however, his good works and love for life will live forever. Prayers and Blessings to Martha

Martha,

Upon receiving your email on Thursday I was in a state of shock and still am. I am so very sorry for your loss. Walter was a wonderful person and I am so very glad that I have been a part of both of your lives. I have always enjoyed coming to visit you both with mom and dad and even had a ball when I ran from the hurricane and made my way to Virginia that one year and stayed with you guys and my Woodside cousins. I am so glad Boo was able to meet Walter! Mom (Billie F. Woodside) has great stories of all of you in your youth. Those stories along with the pictures you have sent me and the antiques you and Walter have given me through the years brings a smile to my face! I am sorry I can not be there for you on Tuesday but please know that you and Walter are in all of our thoughts here in Pensacola.

Love
