I was saddened to learn of John's passing in 2020, I wish I had the chance to know him. I am now halfway through reading John's book "Through Buffalo Gap". Since I am a retired local historian from Waynesboro / Augusta County, I was intrigued to read of the many familiar characters in his book such as John Lewis, James Patton and other notable men from Beverley Manor. I am really enjoying his writing and knack for mixing historical fiction with actual Augusta County history. Perhaps I will contact John's son, maybe he kept alive his father's interest in local history.

My father Rawley Collins, as well as other members of the Churchville Ruritan Club, welcomed John to the community. As you might imagine, it didn't take long for the Generals leadership skills to become obvious. He served his new community well. I also think that many of our service veterans in the club recognized, and was respectful, of his accomplishments and rank while in service to our Country. John also gave my father a Stetson hat that I think he was awarded while serving in Texas. My Dad was really proud of it and wore it for fancy ocassions!
