Ben was my daughter's first piano teacher. Though her lessons only started in January, his weekly visits to our home were anticipated by all. We bonded over being transplanted Alaskans (I'm from Juneau), music and an attention to the world writ large.
The only way I can describe his sudden passing is heartbreaking - and to know it was caused by a similar undiagnosed condition that took my son away only intensifies the feeling. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, the friends who were blessed to know him for a long time, and for others like us, who had but a few moments in his life.
It will take time for us to find a new teacher for Aidan, though Ben would be happy to know she is still practicing. Ben made a powerful impression, filled with enthusiasm and joy, with a fine understanding of reality. He will be remembered.

My condolences to the Zuelsdorf family. Benjamin was a wonderful musician, as well as a special friend. We spent time together over the years at jazz events. He would often keep me company as I was the little silver headed grandma who sat alone, while cheering on my grandson Brandon Braun. Benjamin was always there to offer support and encouragement to the younger generation of the jazz community; especially those from PSU and Portland area. His presence was always felt, with his quiet demeanor and friendly smile. He became an avid supporter and friend to my grandson. He is missed, gone too soon. My gratitude goes out to Benjamin and his family for his devotion to music.
