Susan Toplikar Obituary

Susan Margaret Toplikar

Raleigh

Susan Margaret Toplikar, passionate teacher, gifted artist, and dedicated community-arts activist, passed away July 20, 2020, from complications associated with Parkinson's disease. Susan was born in 1952 and raised in the hardscrabble working-class neighborhoods of Kansas City, Missouri. She showed an early flair for drawing and attended classes and studio sessions at the K.C. Art Institute. After high school, she enrolled at UMKC (undergrad) and Washington University (grad), majoring in Fine Arts at both institutions. Upon graduation, she was offered a position in the design foundation program at the School of Design, NC State University, which she eagerly accepted. Susan took great pride in being a member of the legendary design fundamental program at NCSU, a curriculum that rose to national prominence and sent aspiring design professionals across North Carolina and the nation. Susan was much loved by her students; she asked them to be curious, to be playful, and to be risk takers. They came to realize that the journey is the destination; that the act of creative problem solving is a path to discovery on its own. Students were inspired by Susan's courage and resolve; they admired her as a role model, especially females desiring a career in the design profession. She retired from NCSU as Professor Emeritus after 33 years in the classroom and was, at the time, the longest tenured female faculty member at the School.

In addition to teaching, Susan maintained a rigorous studio presence. She was very prolific, creating works in the studio when she wasn't in the classroom, and completed an astonishing body of work. Susan was a doer and a maker; she could draw like an angel, possessed a magical sense of color, and was a master of fluid, gestural expression. Her works have been exhibited at the AIR Gallery in New York City, the School of Design Gallery, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Meredith College, the New Orleans Museum of Art, SECCA, and many other venues. Additionally, her work is in numerous private and public collections.

In 1986 Susan married Mike Cindric, her life partner and soul mate. Together they forged a rich and rewarding life as artists and designers. They worked independently, sharing side-by-side studios, offering support and encouragement to one another; and collectively, collaborating on public art projects and larger commissions.

Quiet and unassuming, kind and gentle; Susan had a heart of gold … and a fierce determination to succeed by whispering in a world that is dominated by those who shout the loudest. 'Blessed are the meek ………..'.

Susan is survived by her brother, Daniel, her husband, Mike, and Mike's son Mark. The family would like to thank Ne Ne Ekine, who provided patient, empathetic, and compassionate caregiving during Susan's 4-year journey through the hell of Parkinson's. A celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date when the pandemic subsides and public gatherings are once again permitted.

Time passes by too quick - it doesn't seem that long ago when we all shared family occasions and good times together. I like this photo of Susan & Leo; she so quiet and he made of steel. Both live on in the memory. R.I.P.

In 2011 Susan sent us this photo compilation of her and Mike's 25th anniversary. I like it because she looks happy in all the photos. Thinking of you cousin Susan and sincere wishes Mike.

First of all - our condolences to both Mike and Danny - even though the distance apart is great Susan had a big part in so many lives and the distance cannot diminish the sorrow felt.
Our families were extremely close when we were growing up and the many happy memories spent with the Toplikars. Agnes had to fill in a few times when my mother needed help to manage two growing kids as a widow. After I left home Mom and Agnes used to talk most every day, they were so close.
When we were very young, Susan tried to join in when Danny & I took to the woods to play but was usually left out because she was a "girl". My how the times change in this modern world. I remember her favorite joke was about the race between the elephant and the "matterbaby". She had a quiet way and it could be seen that she was destined for bigger and better things in life. Agnes and Leo would have been very proud of her accomplishments.
Quite a few years ago Susan started sending me memorabilia about our parents (photos and information) and this must have been her way of preparing for what the future had in store for her, unbeknown to us.
R.I.P. Susan and sincere thoughts - John & Liz Veix, Rolleston, New Zealand

I remember when Susan and Leo and Agnes came to a Fourth of July picnic celebration with us. I was about five years old. That would make Susan about eleven. We had lots of food and fun for everyone. I do remember Susan coming around and talking to me. I could tell right away that she had a gentle soul ....as so many have already described her as having. Other than that, that's it. I could probably count on one hand how many times I saw her in my life. She was a very busy person attending school and becoming an artist. However, Aunt Agnes and uncle Leo would always fill us in in her life. They were very proud of Susan and Danny.

I have not seen Susan in 50 years, but news of her death brought up vivid memories of this graceful, intelligent, gifted young woman who was a classmate at St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City. Susan made a deep impression on me. There was a goodness about her, a sense of quiet strength. It hits hard to hear of her death from Parkinson's. But it gives me great joy to read about her life's work, her art and her teaching. Lucky were her students. My deepest condolences to her husband had family.

Dear Mike & family -
Our heartfelt condolensces go out to you. We will keep Susan and you all in our prayers. Susan gave me peace of mind before my heart surgery when she shared what she went through with her surgeries years before. My mom, Della, loved getting Susan's cards and notes with her artwork on them. Take care and God bless you ❤

Susan was my very first design professor at NC State's amazing school of design fundamentals program 40 years ago. She was smart, demanding, compassionate, funny, talented, and inspirational. I met my best friends in that studio and I still have some of the work that Susan had us produce as she challenged us, pushed us, and encouraged us to be better...to discover what we could do. We laughed, we struggled, we barely slept, we created, we bonded, we pushed each other, and Susan just made the experience so kind and spiritual. That's who she was, and I will be forever grateful for her kindness, her ability to critique but not discourage, and for her humanity and love of the arts. Rest in peace, Susan...you launched a thousand careers in your tenure. Thank you.

I am grateful to have known Susan. I was in her animation class in 1982, where she introduced me to the amazing world of the National Film Board of Canada and their animated shorts. I will forever be grateful. My prayers go out to Mike and the family.
