Douglas Bennett Obituary

Douglas Haas Bennett

December 5, 1927 - August 22, 2018

Raleigh

Douglas Haas Bennett of Raleigh, 90, passed away peacefully August 22, 2018 following a stroke. She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph W. Taylor and Agnes Henderson Taylor, as well as her first husband, Ben Haas, and second husband, Dr. Willard Bennett, Ph.D.

Educated at Richmond Polytechnic Institute in theater costume, she briefly ran a dress design business in Raleigh before marrying Ben Haas of Charlotte, NC, in 1950.

The couple moved to Raleigh in 1959. In the 1960s, Douglas worked as the first paid costumer at Raleigh's Little Theater.

In 1975, she and another theater costumer, Sue Scarborough, started Raleigh Creative Costumes. The business was a huge success. She bought out her partner several years later and expanded the business. RCC outgrew several more locations in the next 30 years until closing in 2007. "Everything is more fun in costume!" was "Miss Doug's" slogan.

Douglas was a very active member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. She lived her faith; serving as an elder, a deacon, and was a Stephen minister.

Six weeks ago, a long compilation of interviews about her life was published. Titled "Wouldn't Be Fittin'." It is available on Amazon as a paperback or Kindle download.

The family encourages people touched by Douglas' life to write out their memories of her and send them to her son, Joel, at [email protected].

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, an area theater, or a prison outreach charity.

Funeral services: West Raleigh Presbyterian Church (27 Horne St., Raleigh 27607), September 5, 2018. Starting at 9 AM, friends will be received by family in the church parlor. Service at 10 AM followed by a reception and refreshments in the church fellowship hall from 11 AM until 3:00 PM. Private burial in Goldsboro, NC, in late afternoon.

Douglas leaves behind a large family of children, step children and grandchildren, all of whom loved "Oma." A full listing of her survivors and much more about her life can be read on line at www.brown wynneraleigh.com.

Doug was a fellow "Knitwit"in our small neighborhood on the rue. She was a master knitter and shared her talent freely. She was a precious and spirited lady, always ready to join in .We were regaled by her tales of travel with her young brood(lucky kids) and of characters she met during her exciting life .Doug will be missed greatly by all who crossed her path.
