Gerald Katzin Obituary

Gerald Katzin
August 2, 1932 - December 14, 2020
Raleigh, North Carolina - Jerry Katzin died on Monday evening, December 14, alone in a COVID-19 ICU ward, accompanied only by the ventilator tube that was delivering oxygen to his lungs. He was not surrounded by his loving wife of 62 years, Judy Katzin; his loving children, daughter Betsy Katzin (Jim Comen) of Raleigh and Larry R. Katzin (Jim Grimes) of Denver, Colorado; his loving grandchildren, Carson Merenbloom, Benjamin Merenbloom, and Noah Merenbloom of Raleigh, and Julia Katzin of Denver; or his loving brother, Larry F. Katzin (Linda Scher) of Raleigh. He deserved better.
Jerry was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the first of two sons to Nathan Katzin and Bertha Kolodny Katzin. He was raised in Winston-Salem, Miami Beach, and Jacksonville, NC, and graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem in 1950. He went on to college at North Carolina State University, stayed at NC State to get his Ph.D. in Physics, then joined the Physics faculty at NC State, where he rose through the ranks to become a full professor and where he taught until his retirement. He was a brilliant theoretical physicist who especially loved engaging in research and talking physics and science. His most noted work was in the area of curvature collineations.
As a child of the Great Depression, he hated to throw anything away. "You never know when it'll come in use" was a frequent refrain, and his collection included an assortment of old vacuum cleaners, toasters, pill bottles, jar lids and garden hoses – among many other things – to be ready for that possibility. Our favorite was the box labeled "strings too short to save."
Jerry was always an avid and social exerciser. Into his 50s, he regularly jogged the outer track at Carroll Middle School (then known as Carroll Junior High), where he formed a large circle of acquaintances with the other regulars. When his bad back ended his jogging career, he became an avid walker on the Raleigh Greenway, around Shelley Lake and downstream on the Mine Creek trail. Once again, he made a number of social acquaintances there, where he was sometimes called the "Mayor of the Greenway." In addition to his cardio, he did various forms of weight lifting and stretching his entire adult life.
Jerry took great pride in his children and grandchildren, and reveled in their academic and career accomplishments. He broke into tears of joy when recounting that his eldest grandson had been admitted to UNC Medical School. He loved when he had the opportunity to tutor them in math or physics. He loved that Judy cooked big dinners every Sunday night and invited the family over to eat, and enjoyed getting together regularly with the family for birthday and holiday celebrations.
In his younger days, Jerry was an avid water skier. He and Judy owned a ski boat (that Judy won by writing a jingle for a contest), and they enjoyed taking it out on weekends with friends and family.
Once the immediate family is cleared to leave quarantine, they will gather for a private graveside service at Hebrew Cemetery in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jerry's memory to the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, acluofnorthcarolina.org. Virtual shiva minyan links will be shared at a later date.

Yes. He deserved better. For some reason, I just happened to think of Dr. Katzin and searched Google only to find his obit. He was a great help to me as one of my profs at NCSU in 1967 when I had a motorcycle accident and again in 1969 when he was my advisor of my special project class on relativity. I am really sad to read this.

Over the past many years of walking the greenway, I have had many delightful encounters and conversations with Jerry, " the mayor of the greenway." I laugh at the memory of him saying "I'm so old that I don't even buy green bananas anymore." We were shocked to see the obituary and miss seeing the cheery sight of Jerry's orange jacket and smile. The obituary was such a lovely tribute to a special man. Our condolences to the entire Katzin family.

Mr. Katzin, thank you for all the nice things you did for BJ and I when we were roomies at Chapel Hill. I will remember your quick fixes for our dorm woes, the kugel and other foods you dropped off from BJ's mom, the quick conversations about course work. Rest in peace...

I have known Gerry Katzin since 1991 when I moved to the US.

I will never forget Gerry’s generous help and support he provided to me and my family in our first years in Raleigh. Gerry was my friend, my mentor, my life adviser, and my research collaborator. Gerry, Judy and their family and friends did their best to help us when we needed it the most.
Gerry Katzin was a very special man; the world will not be the same without him.
My deepest condolences to Judy, Larry and Betsy, and the entire Katzin’s family.

My deepest condolences to all the Katzin family. I started out at NC State in the fall of 1969 as a physics major, and Dr. Katzin taught my first physics class that spring. I was having a rough time due to some health issues, and Dr. Katzin was understanding (in a time when college professors typically weren’t—it was an era of sink or swim quite different from today’s more lenient university culture). He was younger than most of the other physics professors, only in his mid-thirties, and an empathetic listener who gave me good advice. I ended up surviving that rough semester, but instead of physics went on to get degrees from State in both English and Computer Science. However, theoretical physics has remained a life-long passion of mine, particularly relativity theory, and so I was moved to read in his obituary that he ultimately became an expert in that field. I just wanted to let the family know that even 50 years later I well recall how intelligent, kind, and gentle a man Dr. Katzin was. My deepest sympathies.

Forty-five years ago (how can that be?) I was a grad student sitting in Dr. Katzin's Advanced Theoretical Mechanics classes. What an amazing instructor: he breathed life into the mathematics and fire into our hearts... and what an intellect! After I retired five years ago, with remorse I finally got rid of all of my notes from grad school; all except Dr. Katzin's. I couldn't bear the thought. I've left that job to my children.
Godspeed, Gerald Katzin, and thank you!

I knew Jerry from the office where I work. He was always a gentleman. He always updated me with news of his grandchildren. He would glow with pride. I will miss seeing him every six months. I send my heartfelt condolences to the Katzin family

Gerry was indeed a good teacher. I took E&M (Electicity and Magnitism under him during my first year in gradaute school at NCSU. I remeber his telling the class about their winning the boat He was elated over it.
