George E. Jewell

May 20, 1925 - April 23, 2007
On the morning of April 23, 2007, George Elliot Jewell valiantly completed the journey from this earthly life into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A man of outstanding character and unwavering faith, George fought the good fight and finished his race graciously with courage and strength.
George was born to George Wilton and Lucy Mae Batson Jewell on May 20, 1925 on his family's farm in Travelers Rest, SC. An energetic young man, George held the shot put record for many years at Travelers Rest High School and played football and basketball. George graduated high school in 1942 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., where he was proud to serve his country during World War II in Guam. George started his career as a bag boy at the local Cash and Carry in Greenville, SC, where he met his first wife, Frances Elizabeth Quinn. After 35 years of hard work and dedication, George retired as Regional Meat Merchandising Manager from Winn Dixie Stores.
George was always an avid golfer and carried the legacy on through his children and grandchildren. He first shot his age in golf when he was 68 years old and did so repeatedly for the next 13 years. George was a regular at Wilmar Golf Course, always playing early, always walking the course. He was especially proud of his double eagle and his eight hole-in-ones. George retreated to his Inlet Point paradise frequently over the years to restore his soul, relax, and entertain family and friends. George was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and on the Board of Trustees.
George was predeceased by the mother of his children and wife of 33 years, Frances Elizabeth Quinn Jewell as well as their son, Timothy Elliot Jewell. George was also predeceased by Joyce Cimerro Jewell.
Survivors include, his beloved and loyal wife, Betty Moore Jewell of Raleigh; sons, Gary Jewell and wife, Rhonda of Clayton, NC, Todd Jewell and wife, Cathy of Hyattstown, MD, Phillip Jewell of Raleigh; and daughter, Suzanne Jewell Olegnowicz and husband, Israel of Charlottesville, VA. Affectionately known and loved as Papa, he leaves 11 grandchildren, Melody Jewell Canady, Skylar Jewell, Rebekah Jewell, Lynnlee Jewell, Soren Olegnowicz, Jessica Jewell, Elijah Olegnowicz, Mikaela Jewell, Samuel Olegnowicz, Calen Olegnowicz, and George James Olegnowicz. Also surviving George are two brothers, Wallace Jewell of Miles, TX and Paul Jewell of Travelers Rest, SC; special niece, Nancy Smith of Greenville, SC as well as many other nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Debra Walker of Raleigh, Greg and Angela Moore of Fayetteville; and stepgrandchildren, Zachary and Kara Walker and Alyssa Moore.
A celebration of George's life will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25 at Forest Hills Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends in the chapel from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, prior to the memorial service.

The family would like to thank Dr. Parsons, Dr. Crane, Dr. Rothman, Dr. Boerner, and their respective staffs as well as the Rex Hospital 5th floor Hospice Staff. Special appreciation is expressed to Dr. Mark Nichols for his years of care of the Jewell family, and his coordination of Hospice for George.
