Peter Bornstein Obituary

Peter Isaac Bornstein, a 13 year resident of Ridgefield passed away unexpectedly on May 19th at the young age of 56. Peter was born in New Haven Connecticut on December 23, 1954, the youngest of three sons born to Dr. Harold Bornstein, a Pediatrician and Toby Sampson Bornstein, an artist and avid gardener. Peter's keen intellect, artistic sensibility and inquisitive nature informed everything hetouched. A graduate of Tulane University, Peter's intellectual interests were varied: he attended Prescott College, Harvard University and NYU, culminating in a career of art restoration, art conservation and art collection management. While traveling in California, Peter met and eventually wed, Amy Deveau, the love of his life. They settled in New York City where Peter pursued his many passions, the greatest of which was raising their son Sage. Peter was a modern renaissance man and a connoisseur of life. From fine art to baseball, Peter embraced all his interests with the same dedicated enthusiasm and passion for excellence. His charm and savoir faire were impossible to resist: he was felicitous and generous of spirit, his humanity focused on social justice and his heart on the ideals of beauty and a place of peace. He is survived by his wife Amy Deveau and son Sage Hunter Bornstein of Ridgefield Connecticut, Dr. Harold Bornstein of New Haven, Connecticut, Daniel Bornstein of Saint Louis, Missouri and Steven Bornstein of Key West, Florida. A service to honor Peter's life will take place Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 4:00 pm at Temple Shearith Israel, 46 Peaceable Street Ridgefield, Connecticut with Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer officiating. www.tsiridgefield.org In MemoriamA farmer apprenticeship at The Hickories, a local organic farm in Ridgefield has been created in honor of Peter's love of cultivation, both of the earth and of its stewards. I just learned of Peter's death - Amy and Sage, I don't know if you will see this. My three brothers and I grew up with the three Bornstein boys in North Haven and New Haven. We spent summer weeks at the Bornstein farmhouse in RI. Hal was our physician. Toby and my mother, Rita, were close lifelong friends. Peter even lived with us for a little while. We got into plenty of mischief when we were teens together - he was an extremely intelligent and inventive fellow. The last time I saw Peter was at the Metropolitan 20 years ago or so, when he was restoring there - we hung out in his work studio. Shocking to learn of this death - too young. So glad to see how much he was loved and to know that he had a family to which he was devoted. I have a few old pics of him somewhere - will try to find them. Sending my condolences and best wishes.

This was so unexpected. I knew Peter when we were both high school students. I feel for you and Sage and how difficult this time must be for both of you. Peter was a very kind and sensitive man. Obviously he was intelligent, he married you and I'm sure much of the best of him continues with Sage.

I know Peter from high school, reconnecting through Patricia and 9/11. He was a truly kind and gracious gentleman and his loss will be felt by all whom he touched, but by no one greater than the two of you.
