James Wilkin Obituary

Wilkin, James
James Paul Wilkin, age 41, of Seymour, the beloved husband of 15 years to Stacy Buckles Wilkin, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 30, 2018. He was born in Waterbury on September 8, 1976, cherished son of William and Patricia Wilkin. Jim graduated Emmett O'Brien Technical High School in 1995. A resident of Seymour all his life, he married and "moved down the street." Stop and Shop hired him when he was 16 and he worked for them in one capacity or another since. Jim was a member of the faith community of Vertical Church in West Haven, and also a proud member of the DaeDream community of Mauro-Sheridan Magnet School in New Haven. Always with a twinkle in his eye and ready to tease out a smile, he was known for his dedication to his family, and generosity of self to the needs of others. He loved a game of chess, and represented Connecticut as it's high school chess champion at the national competition in Detroit in 1992. He will be sadly missed by all and will remain forever in our hearts.
His loving family in addition to his wife and parents includes his children Joshua, Julieanne, Samuel-Lee and Sebastian, his brothers William P. Wilkin, III, Francis P. Wilkin (Lucina), Charles R. Wilkin, and Mark Andrew Wilkin (Kerrie), his sisters Mary M. Dooling (David), Rachel T. Jansen (David) and Rebecca J. Wilkin (Steven), many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly. Jim was predeceased by his grandparents William and Marian Wilkin and Frank and Mary Catlin.
A Funeral Service in Celebration of Jim's Life will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Vertical Church, 225 Meloy Road, West Haven with friends able to greet the family from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment in the family plot at Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, 219 New Haven Ave, Derby will follow. Friends and relatives may also call at the Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (RT. 67, across from Klarides Village) Seymour on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to help the family through the Funeral Home or by way of a Go Fund Me page at www.gofundme.com/death-of-wilkin-dad-leaves-4-kids

On behalf of the NBCC and chess community, it is with deep sadness and shock to hear about the passing of James "Jimi" Wilkin, one of our club's veternan members, who left his world on June 30, 2018, at the young age of forty-one. Jimi joined our family in 1998 and was a regular participant in many of our events for nearly two decades. Soon after joining the club, Jimi earned an expert level rating of 2020. In chess, Jimi was particularly known for his unique opening repertoire and sharp tactical and positional play. He surely put an enormous amount of energy into his games. A few of Jimi's most memorable club achievements were winning the 2002 New Britain Summer Open Chess Championship and finishing in first place in the 2014 NBCC Championship Candidates Tournament, which automatically qualified him for the 2015 NBCC Championship. As noted in the Connecticut State Chess Association archives, Jimi won the 1992 Connecticut State High School State Championship and represented our state on a national level in Detriot later that year. Jimi had such a passion and love for chess and treasured his friendships in the club. He will be dearly missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. May he rest in peace in heaven.
