Salvatore Ferraro Obituary

FERRARO, SALVATORE F. JR. Our Lord called for Salvatore F. Ferraro, Jr. on Saturday morning, October 23, 2010 at his home in North Haven. He will be remembered most as a devoted, caring and loving husband of Nancy (Carbone) Ferraro and father to his four children, Victoria, Julia, Sara and Salvatore Jr. (Little Sal). He also leaves behind his mentor and father Salvatore Ferraro, Sr. originally of Bristol (Hamden) and his mother Joan P. (Brewer) Ferraro originally of West Haven; his three brothers, business partners and best friends, John C. Ferraro (Hamden), Peter J. Ferraro (Hamden) and Mark D. Ferraro and his wife (Lisa) (Killingworth), son-in-law of Rose and Ron Carbone, along with his grandmother Pauline (Brewer) Clark (Hamden), 11 nieces and nephews, and many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. Salvatore F. Ferraro, Jr. graduated from Hamden High School and since that time was the proud President of Ferraro's Foodland, Inc. of New Haven. Salvatore personally oversaw and led all departments for the store on a daily basis. He was an active and supportive member of Hope Christian Church on Montowese Ave., North Haven as well as West Wood Christian Academy on State St. in Hamden. Sal was an active giving member to the entire Greater New Haven Community giving philanthropically to various churches, local soup kitchens, voluntary groups, organizations, hospitals and the needy. Salvatore will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Hope Christian Church 211 Montowese Ave., North Haven. Friends are asked to go directly to church. Entombment will follow in the All Saints Mausoleum. Friends may call Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. at Sisk Brothers Funeral Home 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden. In lieu of flowers contributions in Sal's name may be made to a charity of one' choice. www.siskbrothers.com

Sal was a man with may accomplishments, a successful business and beautiful home and family. Even with his business he still was able to make time for his wife and children. He watched his dream house being built around him with the little details that made it perfect. He watched his children birth and their journey through their life and he will still be watching him throughout their life.

Sal was known to many. He was Sal, son, brother and dad. The legacy he left for his kids, wife and family will keep him with us in our hearts everyday for the rest of our lives.

“Some things may change us but we begin and end with family” this was his goal in life, family.

This still does not seem real to me – As I pulled up to Sal’s house and walked up the steps seeing the decorations outside the way he put them, as I walked through the door I could hear the crying of family and family members. I walked to give Mrs. Ferraro my condolences and as I bent down she grabbed my arm and says “Andrew you lost a friend today, He talked about you and your brother to everyone, he was so proud of you.” He wasn’t just my friend, I considered him a member of my family. He treated everyone with kindness and respect no matter who they were or where they came from.
As the Billy Joel song says “only the good die young” in this case it is very true.
Some people say that when you die you watch your life flash before you and Sal would be pleased at what he accomplished through his lifetime.

My family back in CT told me about the news of Sal. We went to High School together where he always greeted you with a friendly smile. We didnt stay in touch- I would see him on an occasional vist to the store - he would always come out to say hello. When I heard the news, all I thought about was what a humble, unassuming, good man he was. My deepest sympathy to the Ferraro Family.

You could not go to Ferraro's and not get to know Sal. A quiet, reserved guy, his warmth and genuineness were easily apparent. His keen sense of business and his caring for the Fairhaven neighborhood, where he grew his store from a modest, family held grocery to the epicurean supermarket it came to be, was a homerun for Sal and everyone around him.. From cashiers to cooks, the store personified Sal. Although shy, his warm greetings and smiles were often as much a part of the shopping experience as the Saturday afternoon "food giveaways". You knew Sal was the family rock....with a gigantic heart. Truly his happiness seemed to come from using his success to make others happy. If you ever had the privilege of attending one of his house parties, they were as lavish as he was modest. He could not do enough for his guests. The best of everything food and drink and virtually an unending supply. There is no equal for Sal's and Nancy's graciousness and generosity.
And now this tragic, unexplainable loss that is inconsolable. All of our sympathy and prayers to Nancy, their children, his parents, brothers and all the members of the family. We have lost a treasure.

I can't explain the sadness I feel today. My thoughts and prayers are with Nancy, the children and the entire Ferraro Family. I met Sal 30 years ago. I was a young salesmen and Sal was beginning his career as a young entrepreneur trying to keep his family business competitive in the local supermarket arena. We worked together to our mutual benefit. Sal always made me feel like part of the family, as did Sal Sr and Joan. My boys still talk about the Ferraro outings,Great Friends, Great Food, Great Entertainment, a Great Family Atmosphere. I will miss stopping by the store to talk to Sal about business, the kids and just about anything. Sal always made time to talk no matter how busy he was.
Sal I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know you.
May God Bless Nancy and the kids. I know you will be looking down on them as their Guardian Angel. Keep them safe until we all meet again.
On behalf of myself and my family, we offer you our Deepest Sympathies. We will miss you.

Sal was more than just my cousin, him and his brothers are like my brothers. Growing up I spent many Saturday nights sleeping at Aunt Joan’s house. I have so many great memories of Sal…. “Sal can we play with your army men while your out” - the stories about Paul and how he puts his money in mason jars and buries it in the back yard - the slide “I’ll stop you at the end and just let you plop in” “You swear” “I swear” - the pool area parties, cleaning up in the morning and eating cold left over pizza, having a 15 minute conversation on how good it tastes the morning after a party - The corvette - Riverside - The cottage in Old Saybrook - and I could go on and on. Sal was 1 of 21 cousins (just on his mother’s side alone), we are a close, loving family and I know I speak for all Sal’s cousins when I say “We love you Sal, you will be missed immensely, thought of often and never forgotten” No words could describe the loss Sal’s passing brings to our family. My prayers are with Nancy, Victoria, Julia, Sara and Sal Jr. as well as Aunt Joan, Uncle Sal, John, Pete and Mark.

Know that the joy he bestowed on so many will continue to live in our hearts. God bless you all.

My deepest sympathies go out to Nancy, the children, and Sal’s entire extended family. I was very lucky to become friends with Mike Sarno, who introduced me to one of the most caring, thoughtful and humorous man, Sal. Even though I only knew him for a short time, he impacted the lives of many and I am very grateful for having known him. I know that he will watch over his entire family and make sure that they are safe and well. Sal Ferraro will be missed my many.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our loving, kind, generous, cousin Sal. He lived his life surrounded by love. May God's love give strength and comfort to Sal's beautiful wife Nancy and their precious children, Victoria, Julia, Sarah and Sal and may His love also be with Uncle Sal, Aunt Joan, John, Peter, Mark, Lisa, Mark and Cara as well as their entire extended family. All of you will be in our thoughts and prayers each and every day. Cousin, you will be truly missed. We love you.

There is no doubt in my heart and mind that God has called upon one of his children to be his next angel. Though he will be missed dearly, he is in the hands of our lord, watching over his family. Hold onto the loving times you had with him to help get you through this difficult time and always. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with all of you. Much love, Miki and Courtney

In Feb 1996, my wife and i just had a new baby girl, two weeks later we lost our jobs, we had a new house and a new mouth to feed. I heard that Ferraros was looking for a new deli person to replace Vinny Copabianco because he was retiring. I met with Sal and we talked. He said that I could start On Monday,March 17. Because my family had a second chance. I will never forget that as long as I live. Thanks Sal and your family for giving me and my family a new start.
Thank you Sal sr. Joan, Peter, John,Mark, Nancy, Victoria,Julia, Sarah, and little Sal your dad was a great man,
Love Mark"deli"Allard, Beth, Caylee, and Cam
