Lloyd Banquer Obituary

Banquer, Lloyd
Lloyd Banquer passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on December 6, 2017.
Though trout, bluefish, striped bass and many of their cohorts might see it differently, the family and many friends of Lloyd Banquer, 86, are deeply saddened by his death.
He was born on May 11, 1931, in West Haven, CT. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving from 1950 to 1954. He was the radio operator aboard a B-29 that crash-landed in the Azores. Mayday signals he transmitted brought rescuers to the site.
After the war, Lloyd earned a journalism degree from the University of Bridgeport. That led to eight years working as a reporter for the New London Day, covering everything from submarine launches to society balls. In 1960 he married Hope Jean Athanas, forging a union with her that would last 50 years. He also volunteered for the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in Waterford, CT, promoting public interest in the institution throughout its early years and helping make it a cultural landmark.
In 1967, Lloyd was hired by IBM as a senior editor and moved to Fairfield. He spent 25 years at IBM working on internal communication.
Besides his family, Lloyd loved sports and the outdoors. He co-founded the Greater Bridgeport Hockey League and coached there for 25 years. He started the Southeastern Connecticut Senior Hockey League and played left wing on its teams for 30 years. Lloyd was also an avid golfer and sailor. More than once he crossed Long Island Sound on a Sunfish, and he had many adventures in larger sailboats as well.
Lloyd loved fly-fishing, both close to home and far afield. On trout season's opening day he was as much a fixture on the Housatonic River as icy fingers and tangled lines. He made six fishing expeditions by seaplane and canoe into Maine's Allagash wilderness. In fall he could often be found on a Fairfield beach, casting for dawdling stripers with intricate flies he tied himself.Lloyd was predeceased by his wife, Hope; his parents, Alfred and Ethel Banquer; brothers, Earl, Herb and Paul; and his stepbrother, Albert. He leaves his son, Douglas, and his wife, Maria, of Fairfield, and their children, Alexis and Jake; and a daughter, Karen, and her husband, Mark, of Fairfax Station, VA, and their daughters, Lauren and Kelsey.
Friends may greet the family Sunday, December 10 from 1-4 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for Lloyd may be made to Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030, or at doctorswithoutborders.org. Dear Doug and Karen:
I am so sorry to hear of Lloyds passing. Many years ago I had the sincere pleasure of working with Lloyd in North Salem. He was such a light in the office; telling stories of amazing lures he fashioned, of the fish he caught, and exploits with his hockey buddies. Enjoy the endless fishing, Lloyd.

LLoyd-- I have thought of you many times since I left southern Connecticut and moved to the boondocks of northern Connecticut. I am so sorry I was unable to join the party yesterday afternoon (12/10/17). I look forward to playing with you again on that big rink in the sky.

I had the utmost pleasure of meeting and spending time with Lloyd this past year and his character, spirit, intelligence and profound love for his family moved me. I was blessed to spend time with him hearing his colorful stories that spanned decades. Lloyd was one of a kind. He knew how to get the most out of every day. I hope he's casting a line right now on a quiet river looking for trout with the love of his life Hope watching (no longer waiting) for her lovable Lloyd to come home. God Bless you Lloyd. I only hope I do as many wonderful things in my lifetime as you did yours. I'll miss you always.

Doug and Karen, my deepest sympathies for your loss. Your Dad was one of the great ones! I will remember him fondly. I always loved talking with him about the books that he was reading. I last saw him at my Dad's funeral and he was still funny as ever. We picked right back up on discussing great books that we had read and trips to the beach. Your Dad was very special. God Bless.

Doug and Family,

My heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Lloyd was a great man, who lived life to the fullest and left everyone who knew him with fond memories.

I can still hear his greeting at the start of each senior hockey season, " Hi, how was your summer, how you been....bring a check?"

Rest In Peace, Lloyd.

Lloyd was truly a one of a kind-a rare and delightful blend of gruffness, kindness, humor and witty sarcasm. I am honored to have called him a friend for 38 years and humbled to have continued his legacy as Benevolent Dictator of the Southern CT Senior Hockey Club. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Lloyd

What a perfect obituary for such a unique and accomplished man. I am so sorry to hear of Lloyd's passing. He was one of the greatest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with. Every time I rage about squirrels raiding the feeders, marvel at fancy fishing lures or see the word "fireball" in reference to breaking news, I will always think of Lloyd. Now, when I hear thunder, I'll know it's Lloyd 's whacking a hockey puck up in heaven.
