Philip Richard Olsen, 79, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, at Treasure Coast Hospice Harper House in
Stuart, FL. Philip (Phil) was born on February 1,1947, in
Bridgeport, CT, to Cecilia (Dowling) and Philip E. Olsen. Phil was proud to have been raised in the inner city, and he had fond memories of adventures there with his childhood friends and with his sister, Maureen, whom he remained close to throughout his life.
At age 19, Phil was drafted into the military during the Vietnam War. He bravely served our country for four years, with tours of duty in Japan and Thailand as an Air Force sergeant and security policeman. Upon returning home from the service, Phil obtained a B.S. in Management and Industrial Relations from the University of Bridgeport and then additional certificates in real estate and banking. Phil was the first in his immediate family to obtain a college degree through the help of the G.I.Bill.
Phil was a loving husband to Betty Olsen for over 40 years, and Betty was the light of his life! As a symbol of their love, Phil brought flowers home each month on the date of their anniversary and he did this affectionately for many decades. Phil was an amazing stepfather to Kimberly Sorrentino, and he enveloped her with love and kindness since she was a child.
For many years, Phil was a mortgage banker, and he also served as Vice President of Greenwood Bank of Bethel and of Union Savings Bank. He was dedicated to his work and in making homeownership a reality for many families. Throughout his life, he enjoyed keeping in touch with many friends from his workplaces.
Phil was devout to his Roman Catholic faith, and he revered Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whom he credited with giving him the strength to carry on after he experienced very serious illnesses in the 1990s. Phil lived his life to the fullest by serving people, and he stated that his mission was to bring smiles and hope to others through the words of Saint Mother Teresa. True to his word, he fulfilled his mission by cheering up those around him through his playful nature and funny antics that would always elicit smiles and laughs.
Phil enjoyed many hobbies including rooting for the New York Giants, playing fantasy football, collecting sports cards, building train sets and model airplanes, doing puzzles, and creating photo books of memories. Phil loved neighborhood walks, and he made many enduring friendships during his strolls around his Oxford Greens and Meadows communities.
Phil was a kind soul, and he loved his family, friends, and pets with all his heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Phil is predeceased by his parents, Cecilia and Philip E. Olsen. Phil leaves behind his wife, Betty Olsen; his stepdaughter, Kimberly Sorrentino, and her husband, Angelo Sorrentino; his sister, Maureen Olsen; his godchildren, Stephen Gresko, Elizabeth Fredericks (Christopher), Whitney Fredericks, and Alexander Fredericks and Christine Koloski; his in-laws, Joan Blais, Marge and John James, Jeanne and Dave Gresko, and Virginia Sharpe; his first cousins, Ned and Lorraine Finn, Nancy and Larry James, and Robert and Susan Dowling; and many nieces and nephews.
