Charles Cole Obituary

CHARLES D. COLE 1924 - 2016
Pompret - Charles D. "Chick" Cole died on October, 27, 2016. The Cole Family will host a Celebration of His Life on Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 a.m. in the Clark Memorial Chapel with a reception to follow in the Main House at Pomfret School. All are welcome.
Chick was a gifted teacher, an exceptional human being, and a true Pomfret icon. He was born in 1924, a time of social turmoil, and raised in Manhattan, NY. As a young teen, Chick was captain of the football team at Friends Academy on Long Island, NY where he earned his nickname that would follow him for the rest of his life.
After graduating from Woodberry Forest in Virginia at the age of 16, Chick arrived at Princeton University in 1941. Three months later the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and he left to join the Navy. When he finally got back to Princeton he switched majors from Architecture to Art History and started rowing crew, graduating magna cum laude. In 1947, he met the love of his life Cici and they were married on June 6, 1950. Soon after, Chick and Cici arrived at Pomfret School and he was a member of the faculty for over forty-seven years. He wanted to raise a family in the country and would have the summers off, allowing him to paint. Chick realized how much the advising, teaching, and coaching would mean in his life - it was everything! And so were the Red Sox, the New York Giants, and everything Pomfret School.

Dear Cici and all of Chick's family.....Was saddened to hear about Chick's death, but we all know that he is in a better place.I first met Chick and Cici at Pomfret in the fall of 1952....their first year at the school. Such a warm and wonderful man and he cared so much about the school and everyone in the Pomfret community. Our class loved him so much that we made him an honorary member of the Class of 1956. He will be missed, but never forgotten. RIP, Chick and my deepest sympathy to his family. Tony Hoyt

So sad to hear of the passing of Chick, he was a good friend and teacher at Pomfret and later on in life we met again as he was in assisted living with my mother. RIP Chick.

Very sorry to hear the sad news of Chick's passing. I attended Pomfret from 1971 to 1975, and remember him as a fine teacher, a creative artist and a dedicated coach. He will long be remembered for his service to the school.
