Charles Miller Obituary

Charles A. "Chuck" Miller, of New Market, died March 22, 2019 at age 81. He had been in hospice care at the Life Care Centers of New Market. His death was confirmed by his wife Barbara Brennan. The cause of death was severe oropharyngeal and esophageal dysphagia.

Miller was born October 27, 1937 in Washington, D.C. to Morris and Sara Miller.

He devoted his life to scholarship as a professor and author. He taught classes in law, both contemporary and ancient, as well as nature, foreign policy, civil liberties, history, and utopian communities. Miller taught at Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University), Princeton University, and for 24 years, until his retirement in 1998, at Lake Forest College near Chicago.

He obtained his bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College, and his master's and doctorate degrees from Harvard University.

His major books are "The Supreme Court and the Uses of History" and "Jefferson and Nature: An Interpretation".

Miller's interests were exceptionally broad, from musical improvisation to wordplay and contemporary politics. He was especially dedicated to maintaining recognition for Camp Catawba, a summer boys camp he attended in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains celebrated in his book, "A Catawba Assembly".

Following his formal academic career, Miller moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where he kept up an active correspondence with innumerable friends and colleagues.

In 1991 he married Barbara Brennan, a nurse practitioner.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a sister, Ann (Patrick) of Arcola, IL; two brothers, John (Wendy) of Wilderness, South Africa, and Tom (Regla) of Tucson, AZ; and 10 nieces and nephews (one deceased).

Cremation arrangements are being handled by Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.

My favorite teacher at LFC. Visited Trackaday several times. Enjoyed reading plays out loud together in my rental in Lake Forest. Benefited from his constitutional law class at LFC. Took a black and white photo of him at Trackaday. Many fond memories.

I'm so sad to hear that Chuck has died. I didn't know him, not really; but we met over Camp Catawba--I was writing something for a magazine. And ever after, every so often, charming things would pop up in my mailbox--a Christmas carol by way of greetings; articles he thought I'd like; news of Camp Catawba and its people. I so regret that I didn't immediately follow up when I realized that I'd heard nothing for a while. But wherever you are, Chuck--you done good. Hope you're swapping classic verse and songs with Vera and Tui, and endlessly laughing and trying to make hard cider out of scrumped apples. "The Gods Are Also Here." - Sally

I did not know Chuck, but i have long known his brother Tom here in Arizona, and had the privilege of being on faculty with Barbara, his wife. I send my love and support to Tom and Barbara, and the rest of Chuck's family.

I had the opportunity to meet Chuck many years ago. He was a very kind gentle spirited man. Some years passed before I saw him again. He not only remembered my name but our conversation many years before. Barbara please know that we will remember you and your family during this difficult time. May God Bless and comfort you all.

My heart aches for my very dear friend Chuck Miller. We have been close friends since 1950 by way of Camp Catawba. Chuck was kind, thoughtful and compassionate. My warmest condolences to his dear wife, Barbara.
