Manuel Riba Obituary
Manuel Riba, age 100, of Portage and formerly of Hobart, passed away July 15, 2012. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from U.S. Steel with 47 years of service. He was a member of Steelworkers Local 1014, American Legion Post 207, the Hobart Art League, the Lacare Art League and the Spanish Society. Manuel was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel, in 1992; grandsons: Scott and Jason Riba; brother, Ralph; and sisters: Adeline Martinez, Monse Ruiz and Mercedes Mitchell. He is survived by son, Richard (Judy) Riba of Hobart; daughter, Linda Adler of Portage; grandchildren: Martin Stevens and Stacey (Mike) Scheuer; and great grandchild, Nathan Scheuer, all of Portage. A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart. Friends may visit with Manuel's family prior to the service from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Manuel's memory may be made to VNA Hospice, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, IN 46383. www.burnsfuneral.com

Much has happened during the past eight years.... My mother Catina and my sister Adelaide and her husband are no longer here to mourn Manuels absence. Rest assured that I will always cherish my childhood memories of Manuel and Isabel.

Dear Linda and Ricky,
Slowly but surely our parents' generation is losing its presence, and we their children are now the 'elder' generation. Seems like not very long ago that we all gathered to say good-bye to Papa Antonio - or was it ages ago? Strong family memories and feelings always survive. Such is life then one of ours lets go.

It's always sad to lose a mom or dad. But what a blessing that you had yours for such a long time. I remember so well your mom and dad years ago when I first started coming to your house, Linda. What was that - Jr. High? Or High School? Your mom was always so sweet to me. And your dad was always quietly in the background. A little part of him will always carry on in you and Rich. Rest in peace, Mr. Riba. You will not be forgotten!
