RICHARD CHENEY Obituary

CHENEY--Richard E., "Dick"

A prominent figure in the mergers and acquisitions of major companies in the 1960s-1980s, died September 2 at home in New York City after a long illness. He was 94. Dick was born in Pana, IL and graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, IL. He was a Naval Lieutenant JG in World War II serving in the mine- sweeper fleet in the Pacific. He later attended the University of Chicago. Moving to New York, he worked for a group of mutual funds, then Mobil Oil, and ultimately Hill & Knowlton, a public relations firm where he helped many companies ward off takeovers and rose to become Chairman. During his business career, Dick went to school at night to study psychoanalysis. He obtained his license as a psychoanalyst in both New York and Vermont, charging patients only what they could afford. Survivors include his wife, Virginia, their children, Benjamin and Annie, his children from his first marriage, Christopher and Elyn MacInnis, his sons- in-law, Peter MacInnis and Benjamin Bailes, and four grandchildren, Mika and Charlotte MacInnis and Louise and Helen Bailes. A memorial service will be held in New York City on October 14. Donations may be made to Knox College or to a charity of your choice.

I had the joy of working with Dick Cheney when I was a young man with H&K D.C. I will never forget his "style" and unique financial consultant's "edge". Clients loved his counsel; I can hear him even now. A great man.
