UFFORD--Charles W., Jr.

Charles W. Ufford Jr., former head of the Trusts and Estates Department of Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher and Flom, died Friday, August 17 at Kendal at Hanover, New Hampshire. He served as Chairman of the New York State Bar Association Trusts Estates Law Section in 1984 and was a Fellow of the American College of Trusts & Estates Counsel, and a former partner at the firm of Jackson, Nash, et al. A leading squash player in the New York area, he was twice Intercollegiate Squash Champion while a Harvard undergraduate as well as captain of the tennis team and the soccer team and an All American soccer player. Born on July 8, 1931, he graduated from Deerfield Academy and from Harvard in 1953. He held the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Studentship at Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he made long-lasting friends from various parts of the British Empire. Although a birthright Quaker, he relinquished his C.O. status to enlist in the U.S. Army for two years at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1959 and married Letitia Wheeler of Princeton, NJ in 1961. Moving from Brooklyn Heights to Princeton in 1965, Charlie served as clerk of Princeton Friends Meeting and later on the boards of the Friends Fiduciary Corporation and the Executive Committee of the Friends Committee on National Legislation. He was a member of the Harvard Club and the Racquet Club in New York City, and was a director of the International Lawn Tennis Club. He is survived by his wife, his daughters, Eleanor Leger, Catherine Ufford-Chase and Alison Salem, eight grandchildren and his sister, Beatrice Zenzie. A memorial gathering will be held at Kendal at Hanover on September 10 and at Princeton Friends Meeting, at 2pm on October 13.
