ALFRED ROSS Obituary

ROSS--Alfred J.,

Beloved husband of Deirdre Ross, father of Owen Ross and Claire Ross, passed away at home on August 26 after a short illness. He was born on November 21, 1938 in Manhasset, Long Island. He attended St. Mary's High School, Manhasset, took one year at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland and graduated from Georgetown University in 1960 and Harvard Law School in 1963. Upon graduation, Alfred joined Shearman & Sterling where he spent his career as an international mergers and acquisitions partner. As a young lawyer he practiced in the Algiers office and much later moved from New York to Paris where he and his family lived for ten years. Alfred was much more than an international lawyer: he was a truly international individual, fluent in French and knowledgeable about all things French. He retired from Shearman & Sterling in 2004 but continued his involvement with France, both by spending time there teaching law at Sciences Po and at the Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Bordeaux and by becoming a board member of the French-American Foundation in New York. He also joined the Big Brothers and Big Sisters, first as a big brother and later as a board member of their international organization. Alfred is predeceased by his brothers Richard, Peter and David and is survived by his brother Donald Ross, sister Mary Louise Irving and 14 nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Avenue on Tuesday, September 4th from 5 to 9pm and a Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 5th at 10am at The Church of St. Vincent Ferrer, Lexington Ave. at 66th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the French- American Foundation.

Deirdre, my deepest condolences to you and your family. I so enjoyed my time working with him many years ago in Paris. He handled everyone and everything with grace and that warm twinkle in his eyes. May he rest in peace.
