FRED HIRSCHHORN Obituary

HIRSCHHORN--Fred Jr. Fred Hirschhorn Jr., died on Sunday, May 6, 2012. He was 92 years old, born in New York City on May 28, 1919. He was the husband of Joan Morgenthau Hirschhorn and son of Fred Hirschhorn and Hannah deRothschild Scharps Hirschhorn. His father was the Founder and CEO of General Cigar Co. He attended Ethical Culture Fieldston in New York City, and was a graduate of Phillips Exeter and Yale University. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the Navy and ordered to join the USS Rowan serving in the North Atlantic, African, Sicilian, and Italian invasions, and was a survivor of the sinking of the Rowan. Subsequently, he served on the USS Cushing in the Pacific and was present in Tokyo before the signing of the Armistice. He received an Individual Presidential Citation in 1945. He joined Abraham & Straus in 1946, where he remained until 1960, when he became a Partner at Joseph Walker & Sons. In 1962, he became a venture capitalist founding Frontier Capital of New York and Anchorage Properties Limited. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, Yale Athletic Association, and Riverside Yacht Club. He was a Director of Fiduciary Trust International. In 1957, he married Joan E. Morgenthau, MD, with whom he had three children, Elizabeth H. Wilson, Joan H. Bright, and Elinor H. Hirschhorn, two sons-in-law, and seven grandchildren. He lived in Old Greenwich, CT until 2007 when he moved to Edgehill Retirement Community in Stamford, CT. Memorial service at Temple Emanu-El, Fifth Avenue between 65th and 66th Street, New York, NY will be on Thursday, May 17 at 3:30pm with a reception to follow. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Thirteen/WNET, 825 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10019.

I am so sorry to hear of Fred's death. I hadn't seen him since my father Arthur Dubow died but remember him as a man of great humor, integrity, style and kindness. My condolences to his family. The world is a lesser place without him in it.
