HENRY KIBEL Obituary

KIBEL--Henry. After 96 years of laughing, loving, shouting, learning, teaching, and building, Henry, the beloved patriarch of the Kibel family, passed away peacefully Wednesday night surrounded by family and friends. Henry created a wonderful life for his family and for the many others who benefited from his generosity. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School, William & Mary College and Yale University School of Architecture. He was a naval officer in the South Pacific during World War II. Henry was an architect, a builder and an artist. He built thousands of apartments in New York City. Every part of the development process carried his imprint. Henry was a master of making things-creating gave him joy. Whether he was building an apartment tower or creating illustrations that accompany the recipes of the renowned chef Andre Soltner's cookbook, Henry's passion never stopped. In addition to the building legacy he created, Henry was, in his own words, the inventor of important things: the 12" kitchen cabinet and innovative real estate advertising- including the successful campaign for 85 John Street, 'featuring lousy views and flushing toilets.' The fancy suspender companies will sorely miss Henry, who supported their industry and whose industry supported his pants. Although he oversalted everything, he managed to live to 96. On second thought, his memory was not so great for the last 10 years, so maybe the salt was not so good. Henry is survived by his sister, three children, eight grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. The funeral will be held on Friday, January 29 at 11:30am at Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue. We will sorely miss him.

I just learned about this terrible news today and, on behalf of myself and my family, want to say to the Kibel's, especially my old friends Charles and Adam, how sorry I am. Charles was my best friend in high school and Adam became equally my closest friend and I basically lived at the Kibel house. Even when we were teenagers and called him "Mr. Kibel", he insisted "call me Henry". I have been all over the world but never met anyone as nice and impressive as Henry Kibel. He was a businessman but at heart an artist designing his own boats and houses, making furniture in his shop wearing his clothes from Sears, and (my favorite) drawing with pen and ink in his little sketchbooks. The greatest family ever. I am so grateful to have known Henry.

Mr. Kibel was one of the best employers I've ever worked for. Both Mr. & Mrs. Kibel were very generous and made their company a wonderful place to work for. I will never forget them.

So many years, so many good memories! Watching Kathy and Charles fight with each other as toddlers. All the great birthday parties and holidays with Lily at the helm. And of course the many dinners at Gino's ...A great life to celebrate a great guy and an incredible family. How lucky we all are to have known such a special man.

The world will be a less-fun place without Henry in it. He and Lili were much loved by so many. Hard to imagine a better-lived life.

Had I known I certainly would have been there - Henry was such a fabulous character whom I adored - The obituary was one day late in my times and not on the 29th - well, guess Gabriel was there with him - Sending love to the entire family - I am so very sorry - He was so much fun - and the family was so good to me

So sorry to hear about Henry's passing. He and Lillian were such a huge part of my childhood; I always remember the long summer days on his boat in the Hamptons. My mother especially loved Henry and Lillian, and spoke of them as the truest of true friends. As well it's because of Henry that my child goes to William and Mary, a little "gem" of a school, my mother used to say, and one that was both near and far away enough for my daughter to make it her choice for college. I haven't seen Henry in so many years, but I am sorry not to have known about his passing until this moment; I would have loved to have heard his family's words for him. My condolences on the loss of a great man.

Although I never physically met Mr. Kibel, I felt the impact of his life through my father William in more ways than one. My father faithfully and lovingly worked for Mr. Kibel for many years. He looked at Mr.Kibel as a mentor, father figure, and friend not just his "boss". I know my father will sorely miss him,as he meant more to him than he will ever know. Rest in peace Mr. Kibel.
