ARTHUR BRILL Obituary

BRILL--Arthur Warren.

Devoted husband of soulmate, Carol Tobin Brill, loving father of Paul Brill and Matthew Brill (from Arthur's first marriage) and father-in-law of Alicia Stivala and Hillary Brill, proud grandfather of Rico, Luca, Jake, Macy, and Madeline Brill, and beloved brother of Judith and Jerry Koch and Constance Levinson. Arthur died while vacationing with Carol in Provence, France on June 28, 2018. He was known for his brilliant mind, but those who knew him even casually will best remember his warm smile, boundless generosity, sense of humor, and his giant, loving heart. Arthur was born in New York City on April 29, 1940 and had a rich and fulfilling childhood with his parents, Jerome H. Brill and Florence M. Brill, and sisters, Judy and Connie. He was a star student at New Rochelle High School, Cornell University, and Harvard Law School, after which he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and worked on tax reform in Bogota, Colombia. After returning to the United States, Arthur had a long and distinguished legal career. Following stints at prominent New York law firms, during which he found time to provide pro bono legal services to civil rights activists, Arthur served as in-house counsel with the Technicon Corporation and later with Whitehead Associates. He played an instrumental role as counsel to Edwin C. Whitehead in establishing the Whitehead Institute (affiliated with M.I.T.), a world- renowned biomedical research institution. At the Institute, Arthur served as a longstanding member of the Board of Directors, he endowed the Jerome and Florence Brill Graduate Student Fellowship at the Institute, and he has supported Director David C. Page's groundbreaking research on the X and Y chromosomes. For more than 25 years, Arthur was of counsel with Roberts & Holland LLP, assisting clients with estate and tax planning, as well as investment and business matters. Arthur and Carol split time between Manhattan and their cherished "crunchy house" in Colebrook, CT. Arthur was a deeply passionate and avid supporter of the arts; he particularly loved classical music and was a patron of the New York Philharmonic. An accomplished trumpeter in his youth, he possessed an astute musical ear and often considered himself a musician at heart. He was also a life-long fan of the New York Yankees. He was adored by everyone who knew him for his generosity, warmth, and charm, and he will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 76th St., and Amsterdam Ave. on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 10am. For friends seeking to make contributions in Arthur's honor, he would have welcomed support for the Whitehead Institute: https://donations.wi.mit.edu/ donations.

Arthur was a friend. Our professional relationship revolved around discussion of politics and markets while our personal discussions were of the old days. I will miss him very much, especially his sense of humor. Rest in Peace Arthur.

Arthur was best friend to a few of us. We were all blessed with his brightness, warm heart, and generous spirit. He will be remembered for his good works, his wry sense of humor and his basso-profundo.

Arthur was my first cousin, two weeks older, and one of my closest friends for 78 years. There is a lovely tribute to him on the website of the Whitehead Institute, where he served on its Board of Directors since its inception. The site is www.wi.mit.edu . Click on the photos of Arthur and his wife Carol Tobin to access the tribute.
Shiva will be at Carol's home, 22 West 66th Street, NY, NY. on Monday and Tuesday from 3 pm to 8 pm.
With a heavy heart, Merry

I didn't know Arthur well. We were classmates at New Rochelle High School, Class of 1958. I know that he will be missed by many of his friends and fellow classmates. As reunion coordinator for our class, please accept my condolences for your loss.
