EVELYN BEREZIN

BEREZIN--Evelyn (Wilenitz).

Passed away on December 8, 2018 in New York City where she lived for over 93 years. Evelyn was predeceased by her beloved husband of 51 years, Israel Wilenitz. Never afraid to challenge convention, Evelyn pursued an education in physics and a career in computer engineering. From the 1950's on, she was a pioneer in the new field of computer science. She designed the first computer- driven word processor and the first computer-controlled airline reservations system. After working for several computer technology companies she founded her own corporation, Redactron Corporation, which became a public company under her leadership and was ultimately sold to the Burroughs Corporation. In recognition of her contributions to the computer industry, Evelyn was made a Fellow of the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA, in 2015. Evelyn served as a director of many public and private institutions and companies. She was a member of the boards of directors of The Stony Brook Foundation at Stony Brook University, the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Boyce Thompson Institute, the Board of Overseers of New York University, as well as of CIGNA, Standard Microsystems, Koppers, Datapoint, and a number of early stage companies in a wide variety of fields. She was the recipient of many awards in recognition of her contributions to educational, philanthropic and community causes. Among others, she received honorary doctorates from Adelphi and Eastern Michigan University, The Long Island Distinguished Leadership Award, and was elected to the Women in Technology Hall of Fame (WITI). Funeral services Tuesday 11:30am at "The Riverside" 76th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
