JOHN KASTOR

KASTOR--John Alfred MD, a distinguished cardiologist, medical educator, and historian of hospital administration, died peacefully on May 5, 2021, in St. Louis, MO, of throat cancer. He was 89 years old. Born in New York and raised in Wilkes Barre, PA, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in History in 1953. It was at Penn that he met Mae Eisenberg, whom he married in 1954 while serving in the Army Signal Corps. After his discharge from the Army, John worked at NBC before beginning his career in medicine. After graduating from NYU Medical School, he worked at Harvard Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania before serving as chairman of medicine from at the University of Maryland Medical School 1984-1997. Late in his career, he found a new passion as an author, writing a series of books on the changes and challenges facing academic medical centers. In retirement, he loved nothing more than to travel with Mae, to learn about his children's careers and families, to listen to Mozart, and to read the New York Times. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Mae E. Kastor; his daughter, Elizabeth Kastor; his son, Peter Kastor (Shannon); and his grand-children, Ben (Jordan), Chris, Sam, Tommy, and Holly. John was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Dr. Anne S. Kastor (Jill). To honor John, his family asks that you volunteer for or make a contribution to the charity of your choice.
