LOW--Alice Bernstein, 85, author of some 35 children's books, died on May 20. One, "Dear Lord & Taylor," was published last year in this newspaper's Metropolitan Diary section. <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/15/nyregion/driven-to-distraction-and-other-nytimescom-readers-tales.html> Alice was a graduate of Smith College and a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and the Century Club. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Martin, her sister Marjorie and her beloved son David. She is survived by her son Andrew, her daughter Katherine, and four grandchildren. My memories of Alice go back to kindergarten. In our early years she was one of my closest friends. We went through 13 years of school together and 4 years at Smith, where she was sorely missed at our 65th reunion last weekend.
Here's one of my memories: we were in the apartment where her bedroom had two doors -- the room door and the closet door. We must have been 8 or 10 years old. She invented a way to keep circling the room without touching the floor by going from bed to chair to door (we stood on the doorknobs to swing over to the desk) and then continue around by standing on the doorknobs and swinging to the next foothold. This, perhaps, is an early example of her delightful imagination.
