Charles Bratt Obituary

Charles Griffith Bratt
1914 ~ 2014
Dr. C. Griffith Bratt was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland where music, professional baseball or business careers vied for his direction in life. Following three years at John Hopkins University majoring in business, music won, pulling him to attend Peabody Music Conservatory where he received a four-year scholarship. There he was awarded the coveted "Artist Diploma" for "Out Standing Performance" in organ and received his Diploma and Masters Degree in Organ with emphasis in Choral Conducting and Composition.
While attending Peabody he met his love and constant companion, Mary Edna Wallis, who majored in piano and voice performance. They married on September 8, 1937 while completing their degrees. They have been married for over 76 wonderful blessed years and raised four children.
Griff, as he preferred to be called, served several years in the US Navy during the end of World War II. His rank was Specialist W 2nd Class, Chaplin's Assistant and Organist. After the war he served as church organist and choral director at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Baltimore and Luther Place in Washington DC.
In 1946 following his service in the Navy he accepted from the president of Boise Jr. College, Dr. Eugene B. Chaffee, the chair of the music Department upon the promise of getting a premier Austin pipe organ. It was just a few years later that the funding came from the Laura Morre Cunningham Foundation enabling the installation in the early 1950's. For five years KBOI radio hosted Sunday afternoon live organ recitals with Griff caressing the keys and pedaling great music to the valley audience.
Griff was offered the position of organist and choral director at St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral. In the early 1960's he was instrumental in securing the Schlicker Organ at the Cathedral…one of the premier organs in the northwest. The Idaho Statesman recognized him as a distinguished citizen with a portrait by John Collias. He served for 30 years from 1946 - 1976 assisting the change of BJC to Boise College, Boise State College and finally to Boise State University. Upon his retirement in 1976 from BSU he continued his work at St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, completing 52 years as choral director and organist (1998).
Postdoctoral work took him to the University of Utah in the early 1950's where he achieved work in composition under Dr. Leroy Robertson. In 1967 he was given an Honorary Music doctorate from Northwest Nazarene University.
He wore many hats, teaching organ, music theory, composition, counterpoint, keyboard harmony, choir (Meistersingers), improvisation, administration, concertizing (throughout the US and in England), and composing. His hobbies were fishing, camping, reading Mysteries and Civil War history.
Instrumental in organ reform in Boise, the Northwest and the US, he instituted the American Guild of Organist Chapter in Boise which remains strong to this day.
As an outstanding American composer he has completed over 650 works, including several symphonies, string quartets, piano trios, cello sonata, many organ and choral works for church, along with four historical operas. Composing music was a very deep passion until the last few weeks of his life. Many of his organ and choral church works have been prepared and published.
Griff was a man of strong Christian faith. His work demonstrated his faith and his calling. His legacy is on going leaving behind many students and friends who have been enriched and challenged by his teaching. As on student wrote:
Bratt Taught…
…Bratt Taught.
With Knowledge, With Know-how
With Wisdom, With Will,
With Passion, With Patience
With Spirit, With Skill;
With Feeling, With Fairness,
With Ardor, With Art,
With Relish, With Reason,
With Honor, With Heart.
We Listened, We Learned,
We Garnered, We Grew…
We Knew!...All Because
Bratt Taught.
(Fred Ghertler)
Griff is survived by his beautiful wife/partner/supporter/and page turner, four children, Barbara Steffens, Wallis and Connie Bratt, Gary and Donna Bratt, Stephan and Kathleen Bratt, 22 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. The family suggests that any gifts be given to the Dr. C. Griffith and Mary Bratt Scholarship fund at Boise State University Foundation.
A celebration service will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church at 707 West Fort Street on Friday April 25th at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery following the service.
The Bratt family wishes to thank First Choice hospice and Comfort Keepers in-home-care for all their incredible help and care during this most difficult time.
"Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant."

Over 55 years ago, I wandered into St. Michael's looking for a church to belong to. I found the Motet choir and the Bratts who made me feel welcomed and loved. Their music made worship more meaningful, and I think of them whenever I hear one of the hymns they taught us. They were always together, and together they still are. With love and gratitude, Kathy Fong

Dr. Bratt was one of the most inspirational and guiding forces in my music days at Boise State in the 70's. His love for composition and music theory was so inspiring! Throughout my life as a music teacher, I have used his instruction so many, many times. We were so privileged to be loved by him, I remember one hot afternoon in Harmony class, when someone asked him what the C. meant in his name. Dr. Bratt whirled around from the chalk board with a grin on his face and said, "Do I look like a Chuck to you?" We also were whining away about having to learn to write in 12 tone ... the next day in class he shared an amazing, beautiful piece that he had written the night before that left us all spellbound. What a genius! I loved sitting in St. Micheal's listening to his organ recitals. He loved us through so many times and his encouragement to me truly continues to bless my life. I loved him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with Mary and his family.

Dear Mary and Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Griff's passing. We do not take the paper and did not learn that he died until tonight. We did not know that he had been sick and would have been there for his Memorial Service if we had known. Your entire family has been special to our family for as long as I can remember. My folks counted Griff and Mary as part of their closest friends. Griff was a special man with tremendous talent. He was part of the foundation of Boise State and will be missed by those of us who know how important he was for the University. Our prayers are with you.B

I was so saddened today to read of Dr. Bratt's passing. He was so influential in my music theory background at BSU during the early 70's. When I came east to attend Peabody Conservatory for graduate work in piano, the Peabody faculty was curious as to why I was so well grounded in music theory. As soon as I mentioned Griffith Bratt, they smiled and shared wonderful stories about his years as a student at the Peabody. I know that I speak for many of my colleagues when I say "Thank-you, Dr. Bratt, for your selfless devotion and knowledge that you so freely shared with us, your grateful students". My deepest condolences to Mary and his family.

Words cannot express how much Griff Bratt has meant to me in the 49 years I have known him. He patiently guided me through Boise College as an organ major and sent me on to graduate school at Eastman, and beyond to my career as a theory and organ teacher in Tennessee. I treasure the moments I spent with Griff and Mary and will always be grateful for their guidance, encouragement and love.

I fondly remember Griff during my music education studies at Boise State. All my music harmony classes and him patiently explaining about "no parallel fifths". I also remember many a Christmas midnight mass service at St. Michaels Church playing violin with him at the organ,Mary singing in the choir, and Wally on cello. He was a wonderful teacher, mentor, performer and always seemed to be smiling and full of joy. He will be truly missed by many. My deepest condolences to Mary, Wally and the rest of his family. Sincerely, Laura Von der Heide

Mary and family,

We were so privileged to know you and Griff and serve as your house cleaners for 15+ years. When we closed our business last year you were our oldest customers. We so enjoyed servicing you folks and I'm sure I speak for our old crew (Dave & Krista) as well. Dr. Bratt always kidded me about paying our service fee the source of many laughs. But Trudy and I also enjoyed his practice sessions on the organ (before he stopped playing it) but also his many impromptu sessions on the piano -- he was unmistakably a very gifted musician! We had many engaging conversations over the years about politics, music and religion and on several occasions prayed for him and Mary. The AccuPro crew, Trudy and I will sincerely miss him and we trust that someone in the family (perhaps Gary?) will read this for Mary.

Love to All,

Dear Mary and Family,
Thank you for all you have taught, by living such a beautiful example for me, and my family.
I have wonderful memories of working with you both, during the days long ago at Boise Tuesday Musicale.
May you be blessed with peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Dear Bratt Family, I hold you all in my heart at this difficult time. I am SO very glad I went to Boise at Christmas time! I went mostly because I wanted to see Griff and Mary. Griff and I had such a nice visit as he showed me much of his music cataloged in the basement. I have always found his music to be spiritually strong and very lovely. I am so grateful to him for starting me on the organ and for setting me on the path I would follow for my whole life. I am equally grateful to both Griff and Mary for being in some ways second parents to me after my mother died. Their influence marked every area of my life. I loved Griff very much. I do believe that he knew that. Goodbye, dearest Griff. How can I think of Boise without thinking of you...
With my love and prayers for you all.

Please accept our condolences at the passing of your husband, father and grandfather. I enjoyed your friendship when but a teenager, spending time with Wally and your family in your home and, for a few days one summer, at your cabin at Payette Lakes. Music has been a very important part of my life. You had an impact on my life. God bless you all at this very temporary time of separation from your beloved patriarch.

Who knew our Griff was such an accomplished man! I have only known him for a handful of years, but I know he is a kind, humorous and delightful soul!

My condolences to Griff's family and friends. How fortunate you are to have him in your hearts. I am sure he would say the same for himself, having you in his heart.

Let your wonderful memories of and experiences with Griff hold you up during this difficult time. Know he is watching over you and is forever with you.

Blessings to you all.
