DAVID LEVITAN Obituary

LEVITAN--David M., born December 25, 1915 in Tver, Lithuania, died November 21, 2011 at his home in Manhattan. He arrived in the U.S. at age 12, speaking no English; within twelve years, he had received degrees from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and later an LL.B. from Columbia University. He served in the National Youth Administration; as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the War Production Board; as Chief of the Property Control Division, Foreign Economic Administration; as Editor-in-Chief of the first United Nations Manual of Operations; as consultant, producer and host for the ABC broadcasts "On Trial� and "Perspectives"; as professor and adjunct professor at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and other institutions, and as partner at the law firm of Hahn & Hessen. Mr. Levitan authored dozens of law review articles, including a 1940 analysis of Presidential control of foreign relations, cited by Mr. Justice Douglas in U.S. v. Pink. He served on the Nassau County Board of Public Welfare and chaired the Roslyn Harbor Zoning Board for more than thirty years. Mr Levitan was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Judith Morley Levitan; his parents, Shlomo and Chana; brothers Albert Viton and Max Levitan, and sister Charlotte Turyn. He is survived by daughter Barbara Levitan (Monica Lord), and son Stuart D. Levitan.
