Joseph Margiotta Obituary

MARGIOTTA--Joseph. Honorable Joseph M. Margiotta. The Hofstra community is deeply saddened by the passing of Joseph M. Margiotta, Class of 1950, former member of the Hofstra University Board of Trustees, past president of the Hofstra University Alumni Association, and founder and past president of the Hofstra Pride Club. Twice honored by the University for his dedicated service to Hofstra, Joseph Margiotta was named Hofstra Alumnus of the Year in 1966, and in 1967 was awarded the distinguished George M. Estabrook Award. In 1992 Mr. Margiotta received a Presidential Medal and in 2001, he received a Doctor of Humane Letters from the University. During his political career, Mr. Margiotta long served as a member of the New York State Assembly and as a leader of the Republican Party in Uniondale, the Town of Hempstead, and Nassau County. He was the senior partner at the firm of Margiotta and Ricigliano, and served on the boards of several non-profit organizations. A former student leader and member of the football team at Hofstra University, Mr. Margiotta was generous with his advice and counsel throughout the decades of Hofstra's expansion, assisting with projects such as the establishment of the School of Law, the construction of the first Unispan and the development of Hofstra Stadium. He was a devoted fan of all Hofstra athletic programs and a dedicated leader of the Hofstra Pride Club. In recognition of his dedication and service, Hofstra University dedicated Margiotta Hall in 1992. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his son Michael, his daughter CarolLynn (Charchalis), and three grandchildren. In tribute to the memory of Mr. Margiotta, all Hofstra University flags were lowered to half staff. Marilyn Monter Chair, Board of Trustees Stuart Rabinowitz President Hofstra University

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family with respect to Joe's passing. I was the first black Republican executive leader in the Nassau County Executive Committee because of Joe's and Sen. Edward J. Speno's endorsements. The Party, the State & the Nation has lost an excellent man, the likes of which we shall never see again. Again, my condolences to all of his family. I know he will be missed.

To the Margiotta Family,

I was so sorry to hear of the passing
of Joe. I knew him well, although we were on opposite sides of political arena, I respected him as a man and

To Joe's family,
Joe was one of the great political leaders not only of New York but of the country. He was always a gentleman who loved his county, his state, his nation and his party. He built his power base on friendships
and his word was his bond. He will be missed!

To have known Joe is to never forget Joe. He had a sense of balance and political common sense that only a case of high blood pressure derailed him when he need the ethical reserves that made him and the Nassau County Republican Party New York's model of ethical dealings

Dear Dorothy,

Words cannot express the sense of loss I feel at the passing of my family's dear friend, "Joe M." (My father was always known as "Joe D.").

My fondest memories are of the early years when Joe and my father payed on the same ball team. I even recall your wedding announcement!

Joe was a loyal friend, loving family man, and community icon in Uniondale.

I will keep you, your children and grandchildren in my daily prayers.

With love,

Ruth (Kosby) Winkler

To Joe's family:
Our sincere condolances.
Joe was a classmate of mine, graduating Hempstead High School in 1945. Joe was also instrumental in the planning of our 59th Reunion in 2004, which was well attended and lots of fun.
My husband, Conrad, played ball with Joe, when they both lived on Cottage Street, Uniondale, in the 40's. Joe was such a great guy!
Sincerely,

Louise Robbins

My condolences to family. My father had many dealings with Joe, and always spoke very highly of him. He was an honest and good man. After my Pop passed away, and everytime I saw Joe, I always said hello, and told him of my Pop's comments. Joe was probably the best party leader the Republican Party has ever had. Again, my condolences to his family.
