LAURENCE ROSSBACH Obituary

ROSSBACH--Laurence, Jr. Laurence Bache Rossbach Jr. died on December 23, 2018 at the age of 91. The son of Laurence Bache Rossbach and Edith Lowenstein Rossbach, he was a true New Yorker involved in the cares and cultural life of the city. He was a graduate of the New Lincoln School, Deerfield Academy '45 (followed by a year in the army), Harvard College '50 and Harvard Law '53. He spent two happy summers with the Experiment in International Living, and met his wife of 64 years, Pamela vanEgmond Schilthuis Rossbach, in Rome. Throughout their life together they traveled widely, and for 20+ years they spent winter weeks on the beach in Anguilla. Laurie began his career as a lawyer, transitioned to banking at Manufacturers Hanover Trust, moved to investment banking at Drexel Burnham Lambert, and finished his career as an investment advisor at Smith Barney/Morgan Stanley, eventually retiring in 2017. Laurie was a devoted father to his son, Peter vanEgmond Rossbach, and daughter, Janet Bache Rossbach, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, William and Nina. He also remained close with his older brother, Alan Leigh Rossbach, nephews Thomas and Andrew, and other members of his extended family. Since his retirement, Laurie and Pamela have made their home in Sag Harbor. Laurie was the definition of a gentleman who saw the glass as virtually full, not mearly half full. He was an active member of The Dancers, The Waltz Evenings, the East Hampton Tennis Club, and The Harvard Club. He delivered Meals on Wheels in Manhattan and East Hampton, and enjoyed investing in and going to the theater. He commerated his family's love of Central Park with a Conservancy bench near the boat pond. Laurie will be dearly missed by all who enjoyed his wit, kindness and joie de vivre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Jermain Memorial Library of Sag Harbor or the ACLU. A memorial will be held in the spring.

Just learned of Laurie´s passing. I enjoyed many years of friendship with this multi-talented professional and extraordinary squash player. I´m certain of his friendship and the fact that I never won a squash game against him.

Pamela: I was very moved to learn last night of Laurie's death. We had lost contact during the past five years. One imagines he has all the time in the world to rectify such a condition, but clearly, that's an illusion. I'm so sorry...he was a grand and special man and I will certainly miss him. Dear Pamela,
When I think of you and Laurie I think of my parents Mabel & Lee. I remember you were old and dear friends. It seems not long ago I was sitting with my father and Laurie at the US Open watching the tennis matches on a hot day. I think they had a tradition of going to the US Open together. My sisters Katie and Cary and I send you our deepest condolences and love.

Dear Pamela, We are so surprised and sad. Your Recent note to us indicated the Laurie was failing, but his birthday call to me in June, found him as upbeat and perky as ever. He was a great friend and advisor to us for many years. We send you our condolences and love, Jil and Jack Stark
