NOBUYUKI SIRAISI Obituary

SIRAISI (SHIRAISHI)--

Nobuyuki, 81, died March 10, 2016 at home after an illness. He leaves wife of 55 years, Nancy, sons Maro and Genji and their wives and children, Voahangy, Marissa, Fanja, Fetra, Desmond and Niko, and great-grandson Jaylen, and his siblings' families in Japan. Born in Japan youngest of three, Nobu matriculated in Art at Tokyo Geidai University, coming to New York City in 1959 where he fell in love with Nancy and stayed. His life in New York City included a steady stream of sculptures and paintings (for which CBS-TV featured him in the early 1960s), working as studio assistant to Isamu Noguchi, then as a graphic designer at Gilbert Advertising, then at Mike Hertz Inc. where he led a team to produce in 1979 his best known work, today's NYC Subway Map. Nobu was a life-long lover of all the arts and frequenter and supporter of the underground music scene, as well as a dedicated contributor to charities to preserve the environment and aid the weak and downtrodden. His funeral was held in Brooklyn. He was dearly loved.
