RICHARD WALLGREN Obituary

WALLGREN--Richard Scott,

died peacefully at his home in Washington, CT, on September 19, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with ALS. He was buried at Washington Green Cemetery on September 26. A memorial service will be held at The Church of St. Luke in the Fields, 487 Hudson St., NYC, on Thursday, October 18, at 11:00am. Richard was Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Macklowe Properties, most notably for the residential tower at 432 Park Avenue. This was preceded by his tenure with Zeckendorf Development at 15 Central Park West, and Corcoran Sunshine at Time Warner Center. It can truly be said that Richard helped reshape the southern Central Park skyline, as well as the staggering value of luxury residences in Manhattan. Richard began his real-estate career in the early 1990s at the downtown offices of Stribling, Wells & Gay. Brokers at that time recall that Richard had "the most fabulous listings, more amazing than any other broker's." Upon reflection, they concluded that it was the excitement and enthusiasm he expressed about those properties that communicated their true value and made him so successful at sales. His honesty, kindness and genuine desire to match up a buyer with the right apartment, led to an exceptionally large number of referrals and resales (and resulted in his fabled Rolodex). Toward the late 1990s, when developers began targeting the undervalued downtown market, Richard honed his skills marketing and selling luxury loft projects such as 27 Great Jones Street, 124 Hudson Street and The Fischer Mills Building at 62 Beach Street. Richard was born in Gardner, MA, on July 9, 1950. He graduated from Babson College with a degree in finance, and began his career in New York in 1973 as an investment banker, enjoying successful stints at Salomon Brothers, Morgan Stanley and Union Bank of Switzerland, where he specialized in commercial mortgages. Richard was an active member of both The Church of St. Luke in the Fields in NYC, and St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, CT. He served on the board of Village Care of New York, which provides community services for seniors and those with chronic healthcare needs. He was a great lover of animals, adopting Cavalier King Charles Spaniels from Cavalier Rescue USA. Son of Marjorie Gigger and Frederick Wallgren, both deceased, Richard is survived by his spouse of 22 years, Martin Kenneth Rook, owner of New Preston Kitchen Goods in New Preston, CT. Also by a sister, Martha Englefield of El Dorado, CA, and a brother, James Wallgren, of Gardner, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The ALS Association of Connecticut, or God's Love We Deliver (for whom Richard volunteered delivering meals for many years).

I worked with Richard for several years. In that time I had gotten to know an intelligent, generous, caring and all around incredible person. Richard was so funny and made us laugh everyday with his witty and quirky humor. I often sought his advise and looked up to him like an uncle. It broke my heart to hear of his passing. The world really lost one of the good ones. My sincere condolences to you Marty and to the Wallgren family during this difficult time. May our "Fearless Leader" rest in peace.
