Dean Elberg. My friend and mentor. My family and I are indebted to him in ways innumerable. His twinkling smile lives in all our memories. He gave me the opportunity to develop into a different and better person. I believe a whole generation of graduate students might say the same. A humanist and scholar whose vaccine contributed to the betterment of the lives of so many ordinary people. His obituary was much too modest but then so was he.

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Elberg through his son Graeme, my longtime, best friend. I particularly remember the time the three of us dined at the Bombay Club, an Indian restaurant in Washington, DC during one of Dr. Elberg's periodic trips to the nation's capital. From my friendship with Graeme, I know that Dr. Elberg made this world a better place through his work and his love for family and friends. He will be sorely missed, but always remembered.

Cassie,Graeme and Chris
I had the privilege of working for Sandy from 1971-1975. We became good friends and I still have his photo on my desk. I would sneak him a cigar on his birthday and take him to eat at places that were bad for him but he loved it. For years we would exchange holiday greetings and catch up on events in our lives. He was a special person in my life and I hope that these and the other stories you receive help you through these times. Love Joe Vasquez

have always considered him a life long friend.
