MARY HUMPHREY Obituary

HUMPHREY--Mary Lou. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of our good friend and colleague Mary Lou, who passed away on December 23 after a battle with cancer. She was a passionate musicologist who specialized in 20th century music. Her career began at New York City Opera, working closely with Beverly Sills during her term as General Director. She later joined the staff of G Schirmer, working on their international catalog, working with established American composers, and nurturing the careers of up-and- coming contemporary musicians. Memorial contributions are welcome at Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, NY 85014, or the Red Cross, 520 West 49th Street, New York, NY 10036. Many thanks to the staff at Hospice of the Valley for all their help and support. City Opera Alumni

I knew Mary Lou since Madison #2. She was an amazing, gifted girl. I only learned of her passing when I read her mother's obituary. My heart goes out to Sue and all who knew and loved Mary Lou. May God bless her.

I worked closely with Mary Lou at G. Schirmer for 10 years and we enjoyed lively passionate debates about music and publishing. For the people who came to know her, the impression was indelible and long lasting. I still remember many of our conversations, and they will probably stick in my mind for years to come. My sincere condolences to her family.
