Syeus Mottel Obituary

1930 - 2014
Syeus Mottel, 83 died of Myelodysplastic Syndrome, the morning of January 25th in his home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Mr. Mottel received many honors for his activities both as a theater director/producer in regional, university, off broadway and off/off broadway venues.

As a photographer he has been widely published in many international periodicals.

In 1965, Lee Strasberg of the Actor's Studio granted him exclusive permission to photograph at the Actor's Studio. This resulted in a ten year photographic archive of the Studio from 1965-1975. His photographic mentor was Bruce Davidson of Magnum Photography.

He then became Media Consultant to R. Buckminster Fuller, with his media documentation of Fuller's activities widely published.

One of the projects that Fuller was involved with in NYC resulted in a book published by Mr. Mottel titled 'Charas The Improbable Dome Builders, published in 1973.'

In May 2010, his cultural photographs of the 1960's were shown at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn in a multi-media collaboration titled 'Osmotic Imagination' with his son Matthew's music. This project unearthed never before published photographs of the Silver Apples, Martin Luther King, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, John Cage and more.

When asked what his photographic method was, Mottel replied 'I was looking to make a diary."

He also recently worked with such luminaries as Malachy McCourt and Joan Copeland, directing and producing projects for them.

He is survived by his son Matthew & Partner Brigette, his Wife Susan and Brother Alan.

A Gathering for family, friends and associates will be held 1pm, February 23rd at The Culture Center of NY at 410 Columbus Avenue at 80th street.

I had the pleasure of meeting syeus on several occassions at the buckminster fuller institute. he was always so gracious, good humored, generous with his stories of bucky and others, deeply proud of his son, whom he spoke of every time, and very empathetic to humanity, as can be experienced in his photography work.
i am honored to have known him.
many blessings to his family.

Syeus will be honored and missed by many of the Players who knew him, as well as many Players who only heard about him and therefore will miss him even more

Syeus was a dear friend and sponsored me for membership into The Players Club. I also worked with him on some of his theater projects. I'm very sad to know that he has passed. I loved meeting with him to have chats about theater at our club. He sent me an email last year that read "Pete, let's meet at the club for a chat and start a revolution." He knew I was a new father and offered great advice. He talked so proudly of his son. I will miss him and I'm so happy to know him. God rest ye, Mr. Syeus.

I had met Mr Mottel, and was impressed of such a warm and loving man, a brilliant artist, that, I knew already, and so proud of and encouraging to his fine son.

Meeting Syeus was a true pleasure in my life.
I will always remember his graciousness as a visitor to Vermont and his hospitality in showing me his New York.

Dear Mottel family, I am so sorry for your loss. I love your loved one's motto "I was a doer and you should be to." That is a lesson that we all can live by especially when it comes to doing positive things. May the family find comfort by drawing close to God during this difficult time. James 4:8
