THOMAS SLAUGHTER Obituary

SLAUGHTER--Thomas Robert, an artist, designer, and illustrator living and working in New York City, died October 24, 2014 from brain cancer. He was 59. Discovered by Henry Geldzahler in the 1980s, Slaughter had more than 30 solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Vancouver, Germany and Japan. He worked as a printmaker in collaboration with Durham Press for 25 years, and his editions are included in the permanent collections of MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He illustrated twelve children's books, including "Boat Works," "Do You Know Which Ones will Grow? " - a 2011 Notable American Library Association book of the year - and collaborations with Marthe Jocelyn such as "ABC x 3," "Same Same," and "123." These books have been translated into six languages. Slaughter also worked for the last ten seasons as the Art Director for the New Victory Theater. As a designer, he created everything from t-shirts to skateboard decks, beach towels as well as a line of wallpaper for Cavern Home. Slaughter served on the board of directors of MoMA PS1, the Public Theater, and the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation. As a director of the Goldsmith Foundation, Slaughter was instrumental in the Foundation's support of numerous art and theater organizations including The Drawing Center, Naked Angels, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Slaughter will be remembered as a consummate New Yorker, a vivid institution in his SoHo community. He most enjoyed spending time with his daughters at his second home in Noyac, Long Island. He is survived by his mother Virginia Slaughter, his daughter Nell Jocelyn, his daughter and son-in-law Hannah Jocelyn and Jimmy Mezei, brothers Bill, Chuck and Jamie Slaughter, as well as eight nephews and nieces and one great nephew. Services will be held Monday, November 3, 2014 at 11am at the New Victory Theater.

It was an honor to know Tom. It was a privilege to be a part of his little family as nanny to Hannah and Nell during college. I'm confident that the education that I received during those years have served me far better than those in the classroom, and have shaped me into the person that I am today. Sending love and condolences to the family, and special big hugs to my girls, Hannah and Nell- love you always.

I feel incredibly privileged to have met Tom through Henry Geldzahler when I was an editor at Graphis, as well as Ray Charles White, Scott Kilgour and JP Russell. His spirit filled the New Victory Theater today, a viscerally powerful reminder of how many people it is possible to deeply touch in one far-too-short life. "Always be the first person to do the right thing." Thank you and bless you for all your many gifts. Leslie

TOM,
I first met where I worked @ The Cafe, with his new love Jesse. Coming from PGH I had a lost feeling being in the big City but when I saw the 2 of them together I knew wherever you are you can have direction! Their Art & Love gave me courage to stay here & be who I was meant to be... Together they shared & showed me a different sense w/Tom's Water towers & Jesse's words (which were sometimes just a look) I knew to own what you believe is the path to your Truth,
Tom Thank-You for your commitment to You & Your most Sensational Art !
In the early 80's you taught me a different way to look at this crazy magnificent World.

I happened to take the yearbook photos in 1969.

I only knew Tom as a boy at Camp Winnebago in the 1960's. A wonderful camper then, a fine young man. Not surprised to read all the tributes. So saddened at his tragic early passing.

I did not know Tom well, only having met a few times at the gallery, but I did come to know him through his work which I love. My sincerest sympathy goes out to his family during this sad time. May the grief be lessened over time with treasured memories he has left behind with all those privileged to know him far more deeply than I.

Tom was a funder who became a friend, someone who never shied away from the truth, and who also never failed to have a good cynical laugh at the NY art world that we lived in. Thank you Tom for your humour, for leaving me drawings and messages that mischievously scared the staff and interns on the front desk of Artists Space, and for your parenting advice for my now 8 year old daughter (I'll be ready for a tattoo!) You were always so ironic, yet generous and kind, and we had many laughs together over the years. I'll miss you.

I cherish the memories of times spent in Tom's studio on Broadway in the 1980s. Glad that I have ink and tempera momentoes from trading art at that time. The ultimate New Yorker, here's a bit of Tom here in Toronto too.
