MYRIL ADLER Obituary

ADLER--Myril,

of Briarcliff Manor, NY, our "famous unknown artist" and beloved teacher, died November 10 in her home at the age of 95. Born September 22, 1920 in Vitebsk, Russia, Myril, (known as "Milly" for most of her adult life), emigrated with her parents to the United States at age three. She graduated from high school in Brooklyn at age 16 and attended the Art Students League, and later the Pratt Institute, developing her own style, which she evolved through many media in her 80 plus year career as an artist. She married Jack Adler on October 18, 1941 and their romance and adventure went on for 54 years until his death in 1995. The two spent a year in Boulder, CO where Jack was a translator and Myril taught art to Japanese children in the internment camps. In 1948, with their one-year-old son, they moved to Europe. While Jack worked with WWII displaced persons, Myril pursued her art, with exhibitions in Paris and elsewhere. They returned to New York City in 1952 and then to Briarcliff in 1955, shortly after the birth of their daughter. For the next 53 years, hundreds of children and adults attended the Myril Adler Art Studio to learn from this unique teacher about art and life. She grew to be well-known throughout Westchester for numerous solo and group shows. Myril's restless passion drove her and Jack to travel the world, to places both common and exotic. In addition to the many artists she nurtured over the years, Myril is survived by her son David and his wife Jill of Newton, MA; her daughter, Sharon and her husband Steve of Croton, NY; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Eliza and Sarah, as well as two great-grandchildren, Miles and Zoe.

Myril Adler's classes were a singular gift in my art education.
I learned from Myril what a joyous experience making art can be.
Queued up alongside that printing press with our little experiments,
we each peeled that damp paper away revelling in the excitement and
spontaneity that are the heart of the artistic process.
My condolences to Sharon, David and their families.

To the family: Your mom was a very special teacher to me and to my own mom. Her ebullient spirit opened up my mother's joy in painting. Going to her art class after school was one of my favorite times as I was growing up. I know she was failing for a long time so I hadn't tried to visit her in recent years but it was not for wanting to. Please know that she is remembered by this neighbor as one of the best.

To the Adlers, May special memories bring you peace and comfort, you are in my thoughts and prayers. No soul remembered with love is ever really gone. As a former student, I will always remember with great fondness and gratitude the artistic inspiration Mrs. Adler shared so well with her classes. May God's blessings be with you all.
