HERBERT SCARF Obituary

SCARF--Herbert Eli,

age 85, of New Haven, CT and Sag Harbor, NY, died peacefully in his home in Sag Harbor with his family by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, best-selling author Maggie Scarf; his daughter Martha Samuelson, her husband Paul, and their sons Charlie, Tom and David; his daughter Betsy Stone, her husband Mike, and their children Deborah, Sarah and Daniel, and his daughter Susan Merrell, her husband Jim, and their children Maggie and Jake. Herb was a Sterling Professor Emeritus of Economics at Yale University, where he taught for over 50 years. Herb received numerous professional recognitions and awards, including being named a member of the American Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and receiving both the Frederick Lanchester Award and the John von Neumann medal from the Operations Research Society of America. He was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economics Association in 1991. He was recognized in many Nobel prize citations including those of Gerard Debreu and Lloyd Shapley for his ground breaking contributions to economics. He was a mentor to generations of Ph.D. students and enjoyed daily coffee with his colleagues at Yale's Cowles Foundation. Herb was an early feminist. The accomplishments of his wife and his daughters were so important to him, and he basked in their various successes. Herb had a huge number of interests, including foreign travel, music, and art. He went everywhere and listened to everything. Herb touched so many people and helped them in their lives. We will miss him immensely. There will be a celebration of Herb's life early in 2016 at Yale.

Mr Scarf was a man of true vision and a great teacher. I was privileged to be his student in the seventies.

I am so very sorry to read of the loss of Mr. Scarf. He had a big influence on me when I was a child. He lived on Cold Spring Street in New Haven and I was a neighbour. I remember him telling me with great pride that his daughter had written a poem and that inspired me to try doing things myself. He was warm, caring, and so very proud of his family. Hearing him speak of his daughter's poem increased my interest in poetry and made me see that fathers could, indeed, be very involved with their children and very proud of them. What a very warm, encouraging, interested and interesting man! I sensed genuine kindness from him, which could be rare in a neighbourhood with a panoply of preening professors. I have always remembered him.

I met Herb when I joined the Yale faculty in the early 1980s. I had never met anyone like him: a brilliant mind combined with such a sympathetic understanding of people. i enjoyed working with him while he was the director of Cowles, struggling through an institutional "identity crisis". When i think of those years, I also think fondly of Herb Scarf. My condolences to his family.

Herb had a profound effect on my life and career. I admired him immensely, enjoyed every minute with him, and was stimulated several times by his ideas and comments to pursue topics in my research.

Herb Scarf was a great influence on my life and career. I took a course from him my second semester at Yale, and it changed my future. Herb wasn't my advisor, but a great mentor. He was always very supportive of young colleagues, and a gracious host when I visited the Cowles Foundation later. We were planning a video interview on his life for INFORMS when he died, and he was looking forward to the project. A great loss, and my deep sympathies to his family.
