Mr Scarf was a man of true vision and a great teacher. I was privileged to be his student in the seventies.

I am so very sorry to read of the loss of Mr. Scarf. He had a big influence on me when I was a child. He lived on Cold Spring Street in New Haven and I was a neighbour. I remember him telling me with great pride that his daughter had written a poem and that inspired me to try doing things myself. He was warm, caring, and so very proud of his family. Hearing him speak of his daughter's poem increased my interest in poetry and made me see that fathers could, indeed, be very involved with their children and very proud of them. What a very warm, encouraging, interested and interesting man! I sensed genuine kindness from him, which could be rare in a neighbourhood with a panoply of preening professors. I have always remembered him.

I met Herb when I joined the Yale faculty in the early 1980s. I had never met anyone like him: a brilliant mind combined with such a sympathetic understanding of people. i enjoyed working with him while he was the director of Cowles, struggling through an institutional "identity crisis". When i think of those years, I also think fondly of Herb Scarf. My condolences to his family.

Herb had a profound effect on my life and career. I admired him immensely, enjoyed every minute with him, and was stimulated several times by his ideas and comments to pursue topics in my research.

Herb Scarf was a great influence on my life and career. I took a course from him my second semester at Yale, and it changed my future. Herb wasn't my advisor, but a great mentor. He was always very supportive of young colleagues, and a gracious host when I visited the Cowles Foundation later. We were planning a video interview on his life for INFORMS when he died, and he was looking forward to the project. A great loss, and my deep sympathies to his family.
