ELDA CUSICK Obituary

CUSICK--Edla.

70, died January 25th at her home in Manhattan, of cancer. She was married to Douglas Clifford and had two children, Kate Clifford and Michael Clifford, both of Brooklyn. She is also survived by a brother, Michael Cusick, and by a large extended family. A fifth generation Manhattanite, she was an artist, art teacher and playwright. Her paintings were shown at galleries in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; her play "Austin" was produced off-Broadway last year. She was a member of the Playwrights/Directors Unit at the Actors Studio, where her plays "Midnight Lunch" and "Put Down" received readings. She taught art classes at Hartley House and Temple Emanu-el in Manhattan, and at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey in New Milford, NJ. She studied art at the National Academy and the Art Students League, where she was a lifetime member. Her biggest painting was a mural of stylized arches against a blue sky, which covered the side of a convent at 10th Avenue and 44th Street, next door to her house. Edla, known as "Missy," was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College. She worked in the 1970s as an administrative aide to two New York Senators, Jacob Javitz and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. In the 1980s she worked for the New York Times as editor of its in-house newsletter "Times Talk," and in the 1990s for Time Magazine as deputy editor of its international editions. Missy made her 44th Street painting studio a gathering place for family, neighborhood artists, students and her many friends. She was devoted to and proud of New York City and her Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Funeral services are private. A memorial will be held in her neighborhood at a later date. Missy Cusick supported many progressive causes, including the campaign against government policies of mass incarceration. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Innocence Project, 40 Water Street, New York, NY, 10013.

Missing Missy.

I was stunned to hear about Missy's passing just now.

A few years ago I found out she was my fourth cousin. Although I was effectively a stranger, she invited me to her home to get acquainted, and talk about her grandmother Aline, and Aline's grandfather, who was the brother of my great-great-great-great-grandfather. The family emigrated from the Netherlands to New York in the 1840s.

Since we were both in the theatre, she enthusiastically invited me to a reading of one of her plays; we had even talked (at least semi-seriously) of collaborating on a musical of one of her plays. After the reading she invited me over to her studio, full of life, laughter, actors, artists, and friends. There wasn't a good moment for me to tell her that her great-grandparents, the Frankaus, also loved having all their artist/theatre friends over in an open-house atmosphere, over 100 years earlier.

I'm so grateful she was generous enough to welcome me to her home, more than once, and she was very amused to introduce me to her friends as her "long-lost cousin." She was so obviously a gregarious, wonderful person of superior talent in so many areas, and I regret that our acquaintance was destined to be so short.

I met Edla when I was working in an electrical supply store on West 39th Street back in 1995. She used to walk by with her dog, who I think was named Jack. He would be off leash behind her, walking very much at his own pace. My two co-workers and I became friendly with her over time, as she passed us almost daily with a wave and a smile. Soon, she would come in to the store just to say hello, and chat for a bit. She was well known in the neighborhood, and I remember that one store had a painting of hers on display in their front window.
Later on, she invited us to a showing of some of her work in a studio down the block between 8th & 9th. I went there after work one day. Edla took the time to walk me around to see and talk a bit about her art. It really was a pleasant way to finish my day.
Edla was truly a nice person, who always seemed totally relaxed, casual, and friendly. Though I only knew her casually for about five years, I've thought about her more than a few times over the years since then. She had an aura about her which seemed to radiate good feelings.

I've only known missy too short a time. Less than a year, but in that time I gained so much from her teaching, her presence, her being. Sorely missed.

My inspiration, mentor and beloved friend. Her spirit will stay with me forever! I love you always. My deepest sympathy to Doug, Kate and Michael. And to Aggie Collins, Ezra Cohen who also were young proteges who I think are second family.

Kate, when you were a little girl you took my class at the Art Students League...every Saturday morning your mom would bring you in and sit with me and chat...Although it has been many years I can still hear her sweet laugh. I can't think of enough fond words to describe the beautiful, elegant, talented lady. I am so deeply saddened by your loss. My sincere condolences to you, your dad and brother.
