Rik was a valued college at McGraw-Hill who led, mentored and listened--really listened, a rare quality in an executive. His kind is always the most missed.

I met Rik some years ago through a mutual friend. He needed my expertise. I deal with a lot of people in my line of work, but Rik is one of the few, whom you could feel his joyous spirit and smile through the phone. He had a larger than life presence. Recently he called on me again to help an old friend of his. It was such a shock to have that friend call me about this. My heart felt prayers goes out to his family.

Rik was an important figure in my career at S&P. My experience in the presence of his leadership allowed for several leadership moments that helped me broaden my perspective on the organization and open my eyes to my potential for growth. He would always offer a guiding hand, great feedback, encouragement, and support. His signature ability to know your name, level in the organization along with a keen sensitivity to who you were was something beyond your title is something I carry and try to emulate.
Rik was not one to sit in the office; He loved to engage with individuals and was passionate about people, service, and customers. Few had a bigger smile, and a warmer attitude and a passion for the work that made you want to give your best. I want to say thank you for the time I was able to work for him. My prayers and blessings go out to his family and loved ones during the time.

Rik was an inspiring "encore" role model and enthusiastic supporter of second acts for the greater good. I always enjoyed seeing his high-energy participation in Encore.org conferences, and appreciated the opportunity to talk about my work with him. I'm sending condolences to Rik's family and many friends; we'll miss his positive, generous spirit.

Once we were competitors, but always in close discussion about the world of ratings. Our common Dutch heritage created another special relationship and I always enjoyed having our discussions about expanding the rating process to a broader world. You were too young to have passed to the eternal hunting grounds! You will be missed by many, Rik, and I will always remember you as a very generous man and fun competitor. May you Rest in Peace, you will not easily be forgotten.
