Billie Alban Obituary

1925 - 2020
Billie Alban, February 7, 2020, age 94. Alban was a leader in the field of Organizational Development, the systematic effort to improve organizational effectiveness. She was a lifelong advocate for the positive outcomes engendered by inclusion. A biographer wrote "her profound contribution…is making it a moral imperative to give voice to the voiceless." Creating the Future Together was both one of her book titles and her lifelong guiding principle.
Alban was born Renice Telfair Wetter December 22, 1925, in her parents' home on Washington Square in Greenwich Village, NYC. Her mother was the 20th century artist Gladys Mock; her father, engineer Pierce Trowbridge Wetter, imprisoned at Leavenworth for his conscientious objection to World War I, was later pardoned by FDR. Pierce Wetter was a supporter of workers' unions and also fought to save Washington Square from demolition by NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Billie was deeply proud of a civic activism lineage dating to the American Revolution.
Alban attended Goddard College and studied drama at Yale University. She married fellow Yale student, Guillermo Alban, and moved to Ecuador. There, she partnered in her husband's petroleum shipping business. She also taught drama, helped found the local Episcopal Church and worked to improve education and food security for women and children. Alban returned to the United States in 1965 and began her organization development career with the National Training Laboratory (NTL).
Alban became a foremost practitioner of Organizational Development. She pioneered inclusive methods, commonplace today but novel at the time. With a gift for innovation and a knack for assessing people and institutions, Alban helped communities and businesses adapt and improve. Her books advocate transformation through large-scale interventions. Her mantra was to include all stakeholders. Alban's clients included top Fortune 500 companies, yet she retained her community roots through ongoing pro bono work. Alban also published extensively and taught programs at Columbia University, Pepperdine, NTL and elsewhere.
Later, Alban was on the Board of Advisors of the Yale Divinity School, served as president of her retirement community's residents association and of the Connecticut Organization of Continuous Care Retirement Communities. There, Alban successfully promoted the Connecticut Bill of Rights for Residents of Retirement Communities.
Late in life, Alban lost her eyesight. She then vigorously dedicated herself to raising awareness and championing handicap accessibility.
Billie was cherished as a wonderful mother and adored grandmother. She is remembered for magical bedtime stories and reading the Narnia series aloud. She loved music, sang joyfully, and recited classical poetry from memory. To all who knew her, she was a charismatic source of strength, humor and optimism.
Billie Alban was preceded in death by her brother Pierce Trowbridge Wetter Junior and her second husband William R. Williams. She is survived by two daughters, Margarita Alban of Greenwich, CT, and Lynn Shea of Simsbury, CT; two granddaughters, Sara Shea of Asheville, NC, and Katherine Shea of Washington, DC, three great-grandchildren and her nephew Pierce Trowbridge Wetter III.
A memorial service is planned for April.

Billie inspired me in so many ways. She married my father William R. Williams, and that changed all our lives forever. She mentored me and gave me insight that carried through my education and professional career. I truly believe I am a better person in every way because of Billie. She was dedicated to her family and her career, and was a pleasure to be with. I recall our last conversation, I called her to tell her about my most recent career opportunity and shared with her how she inspired me to chase my dreams. I will miss her dearly.

Billies courageous fighting spirit and her deep belief and faith in the power of group development through honesty and transparency has transformed organizations. I am so lucky to have known her as a dear neighbor to my mother Doris and a caring mentor to me as we collaborated on OD projects and worked with students. I know Billie is gathering all the angels adding a new voice to the heavenly choir!

I would not be as successful in the field of OD had I not met Billie. I found her to be very warm and willing to help others improve their craft and practice. She had great insights into the psychology of large group dynamics and was a major contributor to the field. She will be missed, as I already do.

Billie was a friend and sometime collaborator. She was spritely and inspiring in her 80s when she facilitated a series of Open Space meetings for us at Pitney Bowes. She always had confidence that if you gave people the freedom to create their own agendas, all the right issues would be discussed. I learned so much from her. She will be missed!

Billie was not only a wonderful friend but a generous mentor who shared and coached others in her life-revitalizing group processes. She was always willing to give her input, wisdom and insight on behalf of the institutions we served. I will never forget her inspirational character. I remember her with joy and love whenever I employ the coaching and knowledge that was her legacy. Billie was truly a great gift and we commend her to the Lord she loved and served.

Billie, writing our chapter, On the Shoulders of Giants: The Roots of OD' was one of the most rewarding projects of my career.
We have lost one of our great lights. . . Go well, dear lady. . .
Love,
John
