I went to school with Ed for six years at Rye Country Day School. We graduated from (different) law school the same year and went into very different fields. But I was blown away by his book We Are Better than This and still thinks it is an important and timely piece of solid advice. We were in sporadic contact over the years, mostly by email, and I was so glad to finally be able to see him at our 50th reunion last fall. My condolences to his family and friends.

Ed graciously agreed to be a reviewer for an academic paper I wrote in 2016, after I contacted him after searching for the most knowledgeable expert in corporate taxation law I could find and citing his paper on "Stateless Income" as a foundation of for the topic and approach. Ed then also hosted me for a lunch near the Stanford University campus where he was on assignment to discuss the paper and we spent two hours together, where I got to experience his great intellect and humanity, his unique humor, and his insights. His guidance and advice changed me professionally and personally and the direction of my work in corporate tax law, which is very much influenced by his 2015 ground-breaking book, which is the North Star for anyone working in the field of taxation law and fiscal policy, which should be read by every student of taxation and certainly by every politician, and which will surely be cited as a primary source for the improvements that our government cannot fail to make in the coming years to reach out true potential as a country. Ed informed me in June 2019 he could not continue with new projects, and I was shocked and saddened to learn this week of his passing after a very long battle. I am deeply grateful and indebted to Ed as a mentor and friend and will miss him greatly. I wish Ed's family the most heartfelt condolences and send my thoughts and prayers and I will think of him always and continue to be guided professionally by his thoughts and ground-breaking works, that will certainly guide future generations of professionals and policy-makers.

I was reading "we're better than this" and much of the book was well over my head. I emailed him and I was shocked when he answered and offered the information that I needed on the treatment on capital gains tax code and associated problems. And I am a total stranger to him...just an old man in Texas of no significance...but he took the time to answer.
